Time off work for recovery

Recommended Posts

I guess I am in a lucky situation. I have the ability to work from home, and even got permission from my boss to do so. Before I have surgery, I will either have a loaner laptop or someone from my IT department will place a PC in my house. I am hoping to only be out between 1-2 weeks, because I will get crazy being at home.

I had bypass 4/28. I'm bewildered by those able to go back in a week. Initially I was gonna take two, but quickly decided for 3, which is what my doctor recommends. I work in an office, pretty sedentary.

I have six incisions, but 90% of the pain is coming from one of them. But my back and shoulders are incredibly achy too, mainly because I'm tense from the discomfort.

@@snickysnack78 Yes that is awesome that you are able to work from home. This should be a very comfortable recovery time for you.

@@dhrguru I hope you start feeling better soon. I hear from others that within a week going into the second week the pain is tolerable. I can't imagine with everything that is done surgically but I am praying that this is my outcome as well. My job is also very chill I work at my desk and don't really have to move around much. No lifting, bending or shifting. I would go crazy at home for a long period of time.

Bending at the waist is not the most pleasant. I can't see myself chained to a desk in a seated position for more than 8 hours a day when it hurts to bend at the waist. I have to move more or lie down. Work is going to have to wait 4 weeks for me.

I had surgery on a Wed and was back to work the following Tues. Would have been Monday except for a snow storm. No lifting and make sure you are still resting and getting sleep! I did great that Tues back...but then Wed hit me like a ton of bricks. No energy what so ever. I was sleeved....by Thurs I was back at it again and haven't slowed down since. Good luck!

I had this too. A lot of my pain was built up gas pain from the surgery. Once that passed (a cpl weeks) it got better. Surprisingly, the more I moved around, the less pain I had. I agree with the incisions. I had 6 and one was the worst. That was the largest one that they removed the stomach from. Even to this day it's sore at times and I'm 3 mo's out. It'll get better!

I was off for 4 weeks. Mostly because I've been very fatigued and having some trouble eating and drinking. I didn't wanna go back to work until I was doing better eating. Getting sick at work wasn't on my list of fun things to do post-op.

I was sleeved, and I took 3 days of sick leave and worked at home the next 2 weeks. Honestly, I could have returned in 1 week.

I had surgery on 4/15, back to work after my one week appt on the 23rd. I was a little sore and tired. 2 weeks post op I really noticed a change.Tons of energy, not as tired. I feel like the moving around helped.I don't sit still very well. My plan was to only be off a weeK from the start. Any longer, I would have had to go climb a tree or something. The more I move and exercise the better I feel!

I was banded on a Thursday and went back to work a week from that following Monday.

I had lap band. I had been off for 3.5 weeks in January due to a bad knee and couldn't walk. My surgery was scheduled for Feb 20 and I really had no further days of PTO. but I wasn't putting this off, had waited the 6 months and was ready! I had my surgery on Friday and returned to work on Monday. Saturday was a little rough and Sunday morning but by Sunday afternoon, I was feeling pretty good. No problems Monday at work, I mostly did desk work. I did have the referred Left shoulder pain off and on for about a week. I just had to deal with it. If I could have, I would have rather took off a few more days but it wasn't too bad.

I am off this week as pto, and the next 3 as short term disability. Taking off the full 4 weeks allowed by my employer!! Gives me time to get used to this new lifestyle, and get into a routine. Plus, I have nothing to wear back to work yet. Ineed to lose a few more pounds, then I'll raid my closet.

Hi! Who was your STD insurance company?

I am planning on taking 8 weeks off. I'm a nurse on a pretty physically heavy ward so I want to ensure I give myself plenty of time to recover. I am also worried and covering for things like energy slumps and not getting enough fluids

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
