Hey all. I'm just a little upset right now. My doctor has his patients on a two week clear liquid diet and I feel like I'm dying. He never told me to use multi Vitamins. I have been reading several websites of other practices and 99% of them have their patients on full liquids and Protein week 2. I have even seen as little as two days post op. I had my sleeve surgery April 3 and I'm down 15 pounds already but I'm concerned about the lack of Protein. So I went ahead and made a very thin Soup with some egg drop and a very little amount of very soft pastinas (the very tiny star pastas.)

I feel a lot better. But I'm just nervous and feeling guilty that I went against my doc. But something had to give.

Can I have some opinions and details of the diet plans you went on post op?

Thanks !!

I was in a full liquid diet for 2 weeks before and after surgery. I was allowed to have yogurt, Protein shakes and strained cream Soups. I also took a chewable Multivitamin. I bought my Vitamin from vitacost. It was twin lab bariatric chewable Vitamin. I'm 9 months out and I just switched to a regular multi.

I did do clears for the first 3 days after surgery.

I was allowed full liquids as soon as I came home from the hospital on day three. At one week I went to purees, at two weeks I started soft foods and at one month (4 1/2 weeks) I started whole cooked foods as tolerated. My surgeon developed the bariatric program for the Cleveland Clinic and is now at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago where he developed the bariatric pogram here, too. He teaches gastric and robotic surgery at the university, as well.

Follow your own teams' plan as much as you can, and do stay away from things will small bits, like popcorn, nuts, raw foods even if you chew well. Go to Youtube and watch a couple of videos with your kind of surgery, to remind yourself what just happened to your stomach and why you can't just impose upon it to digest any old thing. Based on your plan as you described it, a cheat for you would be yogurt, applesauce, thin pureed Soups with no chunks, pudding, etc.

I was taking pills and Vitamins right away, but could only take one at a time because I could not swallow much Water to get them down.

I was 2 weeks full liquids also, but ended up being on full liquids for 6 weeks due to severe reflux ( but that's another story). ANYHOO, please follow your own surgeons orders and don't worry about what everyone else did. They are all different, and each have their own reasons for the different diets. I know it's hard. So, so hard! If you feel you absolutely can't hang, give them a call and see if you can progress to full liquids? I just hate seeing someone go against their doctors orders so soon after surgery.

I did a 4 week full liquid diet, lots of Protein shakes. However, the last 2-3 days were clear liquid. There is a drink called Isopure that is not a great tasting liquid, but it does boast a healthy 40 g of Protein in 20 oz. Maybe think about getting a few of those. Also, I had to stop all Multivitamins a week preop. They told me that it could promote bleeding or something- I can't remember the exact reason. So I think you're probably not supposed to be on Vitamins until after surgery. Good luck and hang in there!

ETA: Sorry, misread. Thought you were preop. My doctor had us do a class at 3 wks postop to learn about the soft food diet, and we got recommendations for Vitamins there. I didn't start a multi until then. It's a bariatric chewable. He should also tell you about B12 and/or B complex, and a Calcium citrate supplement.

by day 2 I went to phase 2..which for me was liquids and all protein..I had bought some unflavored powder and I would add it to my coffee, teas, pudding, Soups which I ate the cream of tomatoe, there was the puree butternut Soup and tomatoe bisque I picked them up at our kroger in the simple truth brand which is organic, I added the Protein to everything that went in my mouth. I drank the pure Protein Shakes and I ordered the syntrex or nectar brand Protein Drink mixes (I think thats the brand names you can google) they have a variety pack and surprising that tasted really good. I was able to count all protein shakes toward my liquid intake amount . I was months not able to drink alot at ones. I sipped all freaking day for weeks. I didn't think I would ever work myself up but I DID! getting my protein and fluids was an all day job. I couldn't hardly do anything else. and I did start Biotin , daily multi in the Gummy bears, folic acid, and then my usual other things I take daily. definitly get taking the biotin and try try try to get the protein as much as you can I have not had the issue of losing hair from this surgery. everyones different. hang in there! I understand why you added the Pasta I bet you have been starving! I'm not allowed pasta till I reach goal which is another 30 pds or so but I did try a bite about at 6 months and oh my goodness BAD IDEA! it felt like a brick! I won't be doing that again for a while...keep us posted xx

I started Soup two days after surgery, five days I added pudding and cottage cheese, a week after I added scrambled eggs, baked Beans, and ten days after I started on solid foods (prime rib, veggies, chicken etc, but chewed it very well). I had Pasta, rice, and everything within three weeks (where I work all meals are provided and I'm eight hours from home so I had no choice). I could never stand Protein shakes (sadly), could never find one I could tolerate, after one gulp I'd start dry heaving from the taste and texture, so that was out. I think your body will tell you what you can tolerate, we all went for ice cream two days after surgery (those that had it the same day as I did in Mexico), and it was the greatest thing in the world, and not one of us got sick, and at night we'd meet in the resturant and order the Tomato Soup with cheese in it, and oh what heaven that was. We had our nutritionist with us and she said absolutely. So good luck!

Some people here do have to do clears for quite some time. Why not call your doctor or nutritionist and voice your concerns. You may be able to come up with s compromise or he may give you the okay to advance. This is the person you trusted to remove a large portion of your belly. He needs to have the full picture in order to continue to monitor your care. This way you won't have any guilt either.

There are so many different food schedules out there, but the one thing they all have in common is high Protein low carb. Very low carb. I think your idea of egg drop Soup was a good start, but I would be very very careful with any type of Pasta.

I think pastas, breads, brackets, chips etc are going to be on the Do Not Eat list for a very long time.

Your mileage may differ, but I think to give yourself the best chance for success you need to follow your doc's plan, and avoid as many carbs as you can.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
