America's best city?

You HAVE to come to Memphis. If you do, I'll come see you. My brother lives in Memphis, and I'm getting banded there, so I'll be there fairly frequently.

In Memphis, you need to do or see:

Graceland

Pink Palace Museum

National Civil Rights Museum (very stirring and emotional)

Redbirds baseball game at Autozone Park

Beale Street

Memphis Zoo

Memphis Botanical Gardens

Ride the Ducks (amphibious vehicles from WWII) in the Mississippi River

Hey Lauren, How crazy is it going to be in Memphis for Elvis week this year?! This year marks the 30th anniversary of his death. I was 7 years old when he died.

New Orleans, New Orleans, New Orleans. For several reasons...Despite having felt the consequences of enduring the greatest national disaster in this country's history, and the lack of help from the federal government, this place, these people are amazing. Through the spirit and tenacity of native New Orleanians, and "the kindness of strangers", the city is being rebuilt, as they say, one block at a time. Dont let the negative publicity scare you away. One thing though, it is oppressively "hot" in the summer months. New Orleans is best experienced in October or April for the first timer. If you make it this way, pm me and I will gladly play tour guide.

New Orleans, New Orleans, New Orleans. For several reasons...Despite having felt the consequences of enduring the greatest national disaster in this country's history, and the lack of help from the federal government, this place, these people are amazing.

Katrina was indeed a devistating storm, but it was not the "greatest national disaster in this country's history". On Semptember 8, 1900 an unamed category 4 storm came ashore in Galveston, TX, flooded the city, and killed between 8,000 and 12,000 people.

Katrina was responsible for 1,836 deaths - a huge number in this day of instant communiction and considering our ability to predict when/where a storm will make landfall. And I agree....the people of New Orleans have done a fantastic job of rebuilding their city.

I have been to some of the places mentioned so far....Boston, DC, Memphis, New Orleans, Florida, and Chicago. I loved them all - but especially Boston and DC. There are tons of FREE attractions in DC, including the Smithsonian and the Holocaust Museum. Do you like history? If so, these are the places to visit.

I've also seen Las Vegas - no place in the world like it - and some of our many natural wonders: the grand canyon, the geysers at Yellowstone, the great salt lake, etc.

I've never been to NY, but I'd love to visit someday.

Hey Carlene, I would love to go to Texas. The people are so warm hearted. I have met a few Texans here, and they left a good impression on me. I really need to take a whole year off work (Yay;)) just to see all the places in America I would like to see. Yeah like I can afford to do that.:biggrin1:

Ya'll come right on over. Texas is so big, you can see just about anything here: mountains, beach, desert, forests, hill country, grasslands, rural life, urban life, the rich life, the simple life, ghettos, barios, upscale yuppie paradise, old towns, gated communities, lakes, rivers, theaters, steak houses, sushi bars, saloons, barbecue joints, fancy places and places you have to fight your way in and fight your way out. We have all kinds of folks....God love 'em.

Wasn't necessarily talking about the number of deaths...even though the number is NOT 1,836, as there is still much devastation here and they continue to "find bodies..." "Did whoever was president during that period sit on his ass while people drowned and appoint incompetent people to oversee the rescue and recovery?" That is what I meant and several "Katrina " experts mean by the worst national disaster. It is a reference to the government response, on all levels, not necessarily the body count.
