Mental Illness & Bariatric Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone! This is my first post. I had a sleeve gastrectomy in September. While the surgery has been successful so far, I have been struggling with mood swings and depression. I have bipolar disorder, which informed my decision to have the sleeve instead of bypass. However, its effect on my mental health is dramatic. My psychiatrist is working with me in adjusting my medications, but my surgeon is completely clueless. Has anyone read any research on mood disorders and bariatric surgery? I don't regret it for a second, but it is still frustrating and discouraging. Thank you in advance.

~ Jamie

I, to suffer with bipolar. I've had a cpl small manic states but as time goes by (1 yr next month) the depression is better. Where I used to sleep all the time now I'm active and rarely nap. What you're going thru is normal. You are proactive by having a psychiatrist and taking your meds. The rest will work itself out. You know the signs when you are heading for trouble and the dr is a phone call away. Seek immediate help if you feel like harming yourself. I wish you well. You've been thru a lot.

I have major depressive disorder and on meds as well, the problem I am having is finding the right meds for ADD.. level of concentration is not where I want it to be. I am 15 months out and meds before sleeve worked before but not after. I have had a couple of depressive moments within the 15 months. Not due to surgery but with family situations...therapy is a help

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
