Only off 7 days from work. Is this too soon?

Recommended Posts

I'm having my sleeve surgery tomorrow. I told my job I will return back to work on the following Tues 3/31. Only 7 days off. I work at a desk so no chance of injury. Is this too soon? I know it depends on the individual but I wanted to see if there are others that only took a week off.

I could have gone back in that time but I stayed out an extra few days. i was fine to go back but I was lucky and didnt have complications. Take its one day at a time If you cant go back just get written documentation from your surgeon to excuse you.

I didn't go back to my desk job until 15 days post-op and I was still very very tired. I wasn't in any pain, but it was tough getting through the full day, because I felt so fatigued and run-down. Definitely turned a corner once I was able to start eating soft foods/purees (day 18) and get more calories in.

I only took 2 actual days off work. Had surgery on thursday. rested Friday, Sat, Sun. Worked from home Mon, tues, wed. Went back on Thursday.

I probably could have gone back Tuesday no problem.

I think you'll be fine. I do a desk job as well.

I recommend taking off as much time as you can get. Recovery times vary alot as you'll read on here.

I took off two weeks, which I felt was perfect for me. In addition to resting up, it allowed me enough time to get used to my new sleeve. I was still on liquids the entire time, but I did get a feel for how much I could drink and how often.

I was afraid I'd want to snack with all the time off, but I really didn't. I was pretty much overjoyed at not feeling hunger.

I spent quite a bit of time walking and napping. My energy was good, but I still burned out easily, which is understandable after major surgery.

I also went clothes shopping for some clothes "down the road," which was really fun and also got my walking in at the mall.

Best of luck to you!

Quick follow up question if I can tag onto this post... I keep reading about food tolerance issues and I'm starting to worry. I go back to work next Monday, That's the day I start pureed food and I'm worried about what happens if you are out and find out you can't tolerate something you tried to eat? I'm not planning anything insane, I'll be making and taking food to work. BUT, what "happens" if you can't handle it? Is it going to be pain or is it going to be something embarrassing?

I was planning on taking a week because that's what the surgeon had said. Then when I had all my pre-op appointments, the PA said 2 weeks. I went ahead and put in for the second week and I'm going to see how I feel. I am an occupational therapist, so I will be on light duty, but it is still a lot of walking. 6000 steps at work is a low day for me. Some days I hit 10000 steps before I leave work.

@@SouthernBelle69 - Honestly there's no way to predict. I am retired, but if I was working I could have easily returned to work in a week. I was pretty bored waiting to get cleared to returned to the gym.

It really all depends on your recovery. I had my surgery on a Monday and was back at school the following Monday. I was fine. I wore my binder for support.

I went back to work on the 7th day post-op as an RN in a busy unit for a 12 hour shift! and guess what... I was totally fine! Obvious no one can predict a serious complication, but barring anything like that. You will be fine. I honestly believe that my recovery was so great because I got back to "normal life" shortly after. Good luck to you! :D

I had surgery on Monday and returned to work the following Monday. I had a pretty easy recovery, sore and tired but no pain after the 3rd day. I was tired at the end of the day the first week back, but I think getting back to work helped me feel better faster.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
