Is the pre op diet needed?

Recommended Posts

I would like to properly say goodbye to all my favorite foods, give them all a farewell party, pre op 'suggestions' are kind of cramping my style...I have to lose 5 lbs..all I can think of is in n out.

Have a proper sendoff! Buy a dozen in & out burgers, and hand them out to homeless people. That way, they will be put to good use.

Well, if you eat them, they're just going to go to waste. If you hand them out to the homeless people, you are giving someone a meal that would otherwise go hungry.

Maybe go volunteer at a Soup kitchen. Have you really examined your relationship with food?

You totally need that pre-op diet. It shrinks your liver so that your doctor can move it in order to get to your stomach. If you don't do this, your operation might get postponed or your doc might inadvertently hurt you. I lost about 5% of my body weight before the procedure, and it was a good kickstart to losing all this crappy excess weight.

I agree with @@Sharon1964 that you need to look at what food means to you. Maybe talk to a therapist who specializes in WLS. My personal advice is that if those burgers are that much on your mind, then you should seriously rethink this operation. It really is an either/or decision. Otherwise, you are not going to have a good time on what can otherwise be an amazing journey.

I agree. I had to do the 6 month thing my insurance and at first I just had the attitude I'm just going to do this and get it over with. But about a month into it I really started to evaluate what I was doing to myself and that this surgery isn't a fix it is a necessary tool for me to be healthy and thin. The class was so helpful!! My surgery is on February 18 and so far I'm down 22lbs from the class and pre op diet. Start your pre op and you will probably lose some of your appetite for addicting foods such as In and Out. Good luck!

Perhaps some clarification would be good - are you talking about the 6 months worth of classes and needing to show at least a little weight loss during that, or are you talking about the 10 (or in some cases 14 day) pre-op diet that you have right before surgery?

the 6 month diet? I would get in the habit of tracking everything - even when you're eating crap and going way over what you should. that's the best thing I took away from that part of the diet. Eat Protein first, even if the Protein is an In&Out monster style triple. track it, and know that soon enough you're having your last one.

the liquid high protein pre-op diet leading up to surgery, however, is *very* important. you're going to feel like crap, you're going to be angry at the world. And yes, you might cheat (I had a handful of nuts one night on mine, and went over my veggie limit a couple of times) but the biggest physical obstruction to the surgery is your liver - that needs to shrink down prior to your surgery - burning up all your glycogen stores by going on a very-low-calorie-high-protein diet does just that. I've heard of more than one surgeon cancelling the surgery if they can tell that you didn't follow the pre-op diet closely.

Even with my little cheats, I lost almost 20 pounds on the 11 day diet prior to my surgery (10 days of shakes and veggies, 1 day of clears and mag citrate). that's 20 pounds I didn't have to lose after surgery.

My NUT explained that you do not have to give up any foods you love forever. You will just not be able to eat as much of them. You likely won't want them. :)

I never had a pre-op diet.

the day before surgery I just had to do Clear Liquids, The night before that I went to TGIF for a birthday party where they had gotten "All you can eat appitizers" and I ate my weight in Potato Skins

Haha nice, but these docs make it sound if I don't lose weight they won't operate, well by usa standards they sure as hell wouldn't becuase I am barely pushing BMI 29..I need to gain weight! Damn, why do I always get on here when I'm hungry

First you referred to your surgeon's preop diet as 'suggestions'. Now by your statement you don't know if they will cancel your surgery if you don't lose weight.

Maybe you should get clarification of the issues. Or perhaps you have a sense of humor that I'm just not understanding.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
