I am freaked out! Is anyone else stressed about food after the surgery? I know that I will be able to eat soft foods 2 weeks after but i don't know how I am going to survive yet another 3 weeks of this liquid diet... i'm hoping once my stomach is turned into a pouch that hunger pains will be no longer an issue.

Anyone having or had surgery at UCSF?

My surgery is on the 17th, I completely feel your pain.. I have been on a liquid diet since New Year's Eve with 10 days to go... It's very difficult to cook food for others and not eat it, I am using Unjury protien, coconut Water, Jello and Campbell's Tomato Soup with water or soy milk... What are the different things that you're drinking on your liquid diet besides the obvious water..?

My diet consists of Atkin's shakes (15 gram Protein and 1 gram sugar), Premier Protein Shakes (30 gram protein) and lots of Water. I eat sugar free Jello and drink warm beef or chicken broth (and since i'm latina i add a squeeze of lemon and dash of Sriracha to give it some flavor). Also, very important to add Fiber to your shakes or you will be in a world of pain. Your doctor/program is ok with coconut Water and Soup? I was told coconut water had too many carbs... I guess every doctor is different. I heard some people are only on a liquid diet for 3 days!!!

Has anyone cheated on the 2 week liquid diet phase?

I am FREAKED out!!! What are you doing to calm down? I'm taking walks, deep breaths and the nerves are still there... What preop plan/diet are you on?

Where in Mexico? I'm in San Francisco.

I was freaking out at the beginning of the pre-op diet. I started on 1/2/15 and am on a 203 Protein shakes per day + a large salad and 6ox of Protein. I am going to be in Tijuana with Dr. Elias Ortiz.

I was shaking in my boots as soon as it started...but after day 5 I calmed down a TON. I talked it out and realized...yep...I am ready.

I have been coloring a lot (I got some cool coloring books at the craft store), my boyfriend and I did a Lego project...a puzzle...work....TV here and there.

Now I am just looking forward to a mini (surgical) vacay in Mexico! It is freezing raining here in AK and...yeah....I need to get the heck out of here for a bit :)

OMG! I was born in Tijuana, no joke. I grew up in San Diego from the age of two and moved to San Francisco about 15 years ago... Enjoy San Diego, it's beautiful. Take a walk around seaport village, check out the amazing malls and walk on the beach, oh and don't miss the sunsets from Sunset Cliffs.

Want to hear something crazy too? I just went to Alaska last year (on a cruise of course) and I thought it was beautiful and the people who live there so brave (for living there year round).

Wow, shakes and a salad, I am so jealous. I'm on a 75 gram Protein liquid ONLY diet. It sucks but the 11 pounds I've dropped in 8 days is so worth it.

Congrats and good luck. We both need strength, support and determination. WE CAN DO THIS!

I have been FREEZING (I think because of the diet) so I am regretting living here right now!

I am super excited to check out SD and TJ. I probably won't be able to check out the SD side much as I arrive really late and am just staying overnight until my pick up, but I am really excited to see Mexico...never been! I LOVE traveling, too! This trip will be a little different because I am used to trying different places to eat, new food, drinking a TON (I do martini and scotch tasting lol)...but it is a new page in my life and I am OK with not eating or drinking and just seeing the sights!

Sorry about no food- that would be rough! I will be happy when I can stop eating what feels like the entire freaking produce section, though. Plus, the looks people give when a fat lady buys a ton of lettuce, a ton of tomatoes, a pound of zucchini and cucumbers RIGHT after the New Year is harsh. :D

Hola! I actually got home 2 days ago. I am doing VERY well, up and moving and cleaning, etc etc etc. I had requested to take most of next week off of work, but I am considering going in and doing half days or something.

My experience in TJ was AWESOME. The surgery wasn't fun...but the experience was. I would not trade it for the world.

I am currently trying to work on getting all my liquids and Proteins in. I haven't hit my goal yet (64oz liquid and 100g protein) but I am hoping to get there today.

My worry is that I am able to get down more and more liquid, Soups etc and I am freaked out that I have a leak. I think my stomach is just healing and it is less painful to drink and eat...but I am paranoid! LOL

Thanks for checking in! I did not have a laptop with me while travelling and I have a hard time replying to things on this forum on my Kindle and my phone.

Ciao!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
