I Want Soda ... BAD

Seriously, why no soda? The acid? The gas? I really, really want some. I've been months now without. Oh, it is hard!!!

Have you tried soda post-op? What happened?

I've had a coca cola icee (like 1/4 of a cup maybe) and I drank it very slowly and was fine. Maybe this would satisfy your urge? I don't plan on trying regular soda anytime soon. I tried some wine not realizing it was carbonated and it did not feel good at all. I also don't really want to get in the habit of drinking soda. It wasn't a habit before surgery but I wouldn't want it to become one. Some people are fine drinking carbonated beverages though so who knows??

To answer "why no soda?": the carbonation, and it's not nutritionally beneficial.

Have you ever tried a sodastream machine? The kind I have you can make it less or more carbonated (I don't know if you can with all of them). And I just use Dasani flavor drops and mio instead of their sugary mixes. I like it, curbs the want for carbonated soda. I'm hoping that eventually once I have the surgery I'll be able to use it again.

Why waste vaulable space on a slider, non nutritious beverage? Post-op it's enough of a challenge to get in healthy fluids. As mentioned above the carbonation is not good for your belly.

I was a serious diet coke-aholic. Had serious urges after surgery which went away the minute I tried the soda. Was disgusting. Can't tolerate at all. Hopefully that will happen to you because not a good habit to have. I'm glad it turned out this way.

I was told flat clear diet soda is okay..not gonna chance it though! It's my third day out, I quickly noticed that if as I took a swig, not even a *big swig," of Water, Protein Shake, or even swallowed juuuust a little too much sugar-free Jello, my stomach felt horrid!!

OK, I've got it now - SIPS only.

I was told never again can I have carbonated drinks,bc it swells the stomach and the air that gets trapped in the stomach makes you feel real bad, also the sugar content is real high so you could get a sugar high then low, also not good... Although I was told by someone at a support group I attended that she bought these drops that you add to your Water and it tastes like fanta orange or grape, said she bought them at Walmart in the section that has all those Water enhancers. Might could try those... Oh and my dietician said I could take a coke zero (no sugar) and shake the carbonation out and have like a half cup, but to do that rarely because it might tempt you to have it with carbonation.

I added some root beer extract to my vanilla Protein Shake. Tasted like a melted float. It wasn't perfect, but it helped with my soda craving.

I've had a sip or two of diet soda since surgery, and every time my stomach hurts immediately, and it reminds me why I shouldn't do it.

@@maria88 Yeah, that sucks. I weened myself off of soda and sugar a couple of years ago to lose weight (which hasn't been successful but I kept it up). That's why I've used the soda machine and the Water drops, about once every couple of weeks or so if I get a hankering for some carbonation. I'll probably end up just having to sell it.

I know soda addiction is a hard habit to break, but aren't we all trying to healthy, nit just skinny? Sodas weren't healthy pre-op, now we have to worry about the carbonation and extra fake sugars we just don't need. If we're looking to change our eating habits for better ones this is a chance to get rid of one more bad habit.

My personal belief is that everything is fine in moderation. This is a way of life that I have to stick to forever so I don't believe in completely banning myself from eating anything, unless of course it makes me feel sick after eating it. Granted, some people need a lot more structure in their post op life and I can certainly appreciate that. I think it comes down to being honest with yourself. If you can have a flat soda or a slurpee or whatever as just a once in a while thing then great. But if you are the type where giving yourself too many options is like opening the floodgates than don't do it.

Edit to add: if you were hooked on something pre op I think it's pretty clear that it's something you should avoid post op. I didn't have problems with drinking soda so having a slurpee once in a blue moon won't throw me off course.

Why don't you try it and see what happens?

Worst that could happen is that, since you're addicted to it ("Oh, it is hard!!!) that you keep drinking soda, stretch out your stomach, not lose any more weight, and regain back all the weight you've lost.

Or not.

Go ahead ....

Used to drink 2-3 diet cokes a day. Haven't had one in 7 months and don't miss them. I may have replaced them with coffee, though. Like candy and starches, try to put the blinders on and choose to not crave them. :wacko:

      Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

      Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
