what to order in a restaurant.. Should I even go?

Recommended Posts

So my mom and I and some of my moms friends are going out to eat at the Loveless Cafe... Southern food, I think. I've always wanted to go out to eat at this place, I shoulda gone before my surgery.

So I'm thinking just getting an egg and ham? Surgery date was 4 December 2014. I'm on "soft" food. Able to eat 1/2 cup of food in one meal.

But can I eat mashed potatoes? Or grits? Country ham? The menu on the website is not very helpful. I don't know how the restaurant prepares the food, so I have no idea... I'm thinking I should just stay home and let them go.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

I was invited to a birthday party at a restaurant amount 2 months after my surgery. I looked online at the menu too. I decided I was going to stick with Soup. I got lucky, they had clam chowder that day. I ordered the soup and of course everyone asked how it was etc. I said it was great, but since I could only eat a handful I just stopped eating and started up conversations. When anyone asked why I didn't finish I just told them I ate before I came, and I guess I was still full ;), but I was definitely saving it for later. I've become really good at eating out and making up excuses now :0.

Usually like to night my husband is going thru a drive thru (Taco Bell) I got nothing. I will make my own food here at the house so I know whats going into my body. Yesterday was my 16 yr old daughters birthday so I took the family to cheddars (the home of nothing healthy) waitress asked what I wanted I told her nothing. I would share off my family's plate. She brought me a small plate and I Ate a few bites of my girls grilled chicken and a couple mushrooms. I've decided it's pointless to buy food out because I can't eat it. We went to Hardee's and I ordered a turkey burger wrapped in lettuce instead of bread But could only manage 3 bites so as of now I'm done ordering myself food out! Too much wasting. If Soup were an option I'd go somewhere that offered a healthy soup.

Southern food is difficult. Maybe broiled catfish/red snapper or 1/2 cup mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes or 1/2 cup black eye peas, baked chicken... But yes, I think you should still go, it will make you feel more confident that you can handle eating out. I went to ruby Tuesday shortly after surgery and asked them to strain the Soup of the day. They were very accommodating and the soup was delicious. More importantly, I enjoyed feeling normal and eating out with my family.

Good advice, thanks, I thought about the "I ate shortly before we came" line, and we're going for brunch, so I guess that helps too.

I heard at one of the support groups I've attended to not order anything, but eat off another's plate... Seems like I might go that way too....now if only I can convince my momma to order some broiled chicken, or I might just stick with a side of mashed potatoes and take a cheese stick for Protein.

Of course you should go. It's good to figuring out how to eat in practical situations. This is in Tennessee?I googled the restaurant. eggs would be a safe choice. Remember it Protein first. I'd go for an omelette, egg what I could and then get the rest to go. I went to iHop when I was 3 weeks out and did just that. I think I ate a quarter of it. I got a to go box and the nibbled on it the next day. It was enough for 3 meals.

Well if you are going to go. I would suggest any Soups or soft foods. I was not big on eating carbs for the first few months but if they work for you i say go for it. I personally would ask the waitress what they use to cook certain foods. Also soft baked fish is also good at your stage if they serve that at the restaurant you are going to. Remember always ask questions because it your body and your money so ask on.

I looked at the menu! Lots of choices. :)

Egg, scrambled soft with cheese, or my new (disgusting) favorite? An egg, soft scrambled with sausage gravy (no biscuit) on the side. I pour the gravy on the egg and it's delicious.

lunch or dinner? Soup!

Once you are on full foods, the options open, but they have a good sides menu. Seriously!

For me I will either get an appetizer or share an entree with a friend. As far as restaurants go pretty much all of them have at least one healthy option, so I wouldn't worry. Not always the case with fast food joints, I stay away from them. When I do go I can never find anything healthy I will just order tea or coffee.< /p>

As far as the restaurant you're going to, I've never heard of that chain. I'm sure they have some type of seasoned veggie dish you can have. I say still go out and enjoy social eating with friends. It's much cheaper now that I have my sleeve because I order such small things. Even just getting some tea at a cafe, there's something special about sitting down and eating with someone that you don't have to give up now that you have wls

i just looked at the menu, fruit bowl for Breakfast. That goes down really well for me because fruits are mostly water/fiber. mash potato, sweet potato, green Beans, or veggie of the day for the side menu will work

I was super worried about eating out. I am OCD about knowing exactly what is going into my body so I an log it.

So far I have been able to eat a 4pc grilled chicken nugget at Chik Fila, We went to a restaurant here called Mimi's and my mom ordered the pot roast because that is what I wanted to eat. I had about 3oz of the meat. it was so tender and so YUMMY!! When my mom is here she likes to get Mexican food, I am in AZ, so we went the one night I just ordered the carne asada and ate some of that dipped in the salsa. And my all time favorite before and now after surgery is Cracker Barrel for my grilled chicken tenderloins. Love Them. I get a 4pc eat two at the restaurant and bring two home for the next day.

You really can make it work almost anywhere with a little planning. Good luck and try to just enjoy yourself and not worry about what other people might think. I know the waitresses have looked at me weird a few times when I don't order anything to drink, but oh well I don't care! lol

eggs with sausage gravy??? This is the most genius thing I've read today. I'm going to keep this is mind if I happen upon some sausage gravy.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
