Anyone experience keytones in urine?

Recommended Posts

So I had to go to the ER to get UV fluids and one thing the nurse told me was that there was some keytone in my urine but it was because I a losing weight. I know my body is burning fat now and that is what's happening but I am concerned that it is also because of not getting enough carbs. I am diabetic but my sugars are normal in fact lower than they used to be. I'm a little worried that this could be a problem.

You are correct, ketones in your urine means you are burning fat. That's nothing to worry about. And why do you think that you need more carbs? A normal, stable blood sugar level is also a good thing. More carbs might cause high, unstable blood sugar levels. As a fellow diabetic, I am confused by your concerns. It sounds like you're fine.

The low carb/high Protein thing concerns me more for the kidney stone issue. Believe me I am thrilled my blood sugar is lower.

As long as you don't already have kidney disease and you are not over consuming Protein, kidney stones should not be an issue. Enjoy your weight loss and your improved blood sugar levels! I was on the Atkins diet for over two years, keeping my carb count under 60 grams per day with no ill effects.

I was just diagnosed this past week with type 2 and was so close to surgery I could taste it, but they will not touch me until my sugars are lowered of course.. I would love to hear stories about other diabetics and their surgeries...

Thanks

I am a type 2 diabetic, and the requirements were my AIC needed to be at 7 or below. Mine was 6.2 day of surgery. You can do it!

When did you have your surgery? And how are you doing?

Yes the anesthesiologist said they do. He didn't give me what level it should be.

That's great!!! I have been waiting for my call again...since they put me off in March because of my diabetes, I was put back down the list. They told me that there were 20 patients ahead of me so it would be mid july before I would have my surgery, but she put me on the cancellation list because I can go on short notice. Hoping that call comes soon. Things get really busy here on the farm in the summer!!!!

The anesthesiologist checked my blood sugars the day of surgery. My a1c was something like 11 and blood sugars were over 300. I know...bad. I had avoided taking any meds when I got diagnosed in the spring of last year hoping I'd get surgery and would get things squared away. The anesthesiologist gave me what I would call a "stern talking to" before surgery. They went ahead and did the sleeve on October 8. Fast forward and I had everything rechecked a couple times, most recently in January. My sugars were at 89 and a1c was 5.1. I'm down 127 pounds since surgery. I am VERY compliant with my diet and exercise. I guess it depends on your specific surgeon as to whether they will proceed with the surgery if your sugars and a1c are out of whack. Mine did and this procedure has been the absolute best thing I've ever done for myself. Best of luck to you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
