18 year old preparing for sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

So I am 18 years old and will be attending a seminar next month about Gastric sleeve surgery. I already have the name of the surgeon I will be assigned to, but I was wondering about the process? Do you guys think it will take a long time before I actually get the surgery? I was aiming on doing it before summer 2015, but I was on instagram and saw a lady write that she started the process in Aug 2014 and was only able to get the surgery this month. I was shooting for maybe getting in late January or February. I live in New York btw :)

it all depends on your medical insurance some insurances require 6 month long of your attempts to loose weight. For example of you have tried weight watches or any diets.

It's depends on the program and your insurance. I started the last week of April. I missed one month at the doctor and was sleeved in September, still under 6 mths. However some insurance want people on pre-op supervised diets from anywhere from 3 mths to a year. The questions you have are questions to ask at the seminar.

I agree, it will all depend on your insurance company and your surgeons requirements. I went for my first visit in July and didn't get sleeved until 12/16. My insurance wouldn't cover it so I was self pay and it still took that long.

Best of luck!!

The quickest way to get it done is to be well informed about the process and the requirements. Get yourself a folder and a calendar. Be meticulous about keeping your documents in order, having a checklist of things to do, and a calender to be able to view upcoming appointments. Open a MyFitness Pal account because tracking your nutritional intake will be part of the process, and you might as well get started on that.

I can't tell you many posts I've read regarding delays because of an unmet requirement. This process is not complicated, but there can be all kinds of delays when people are uninformed and disorganized.

ITA : My program gave us handbooks at the first meeting with the surgeon that literally guides you through the process from pre to post op. It has been tremendously helpful to be able to look back and double check things. They also gave handout folders at the seminar that reviewed everything they discussed. If your program doesn't provide this, get a trapper keeper or a loose leaf binder from the dollar store and keep everything in it. It will prove to be an invaluable tool.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
