I thought we had to take it for life. Seriously. I'm almost a year out and am still taking it (well, the equivalent of it). But, as much as I love my surgeon, she's not good with non-surgical details. I only recently found out that we could actually use straws now and didn't have to crush our pills. I'll have to ask at my next appointment. Glad you brought this up.

I did 40mg the first 3 months then my surgeon cut it back to 20. I just had my 6 month follow up this past week and my surgeon wants me to stop it. I asked her for one more script just in case. I'm going to wean off, and take it every other day for a few weeks. When I cut back to 20 I had a few heartburn days, so want to be cautious, but I have faith that I will soon be able to discontinue completely.

I was told "several months". At close to a year, I am still on it.

I had RNY. I had very severe uncontrollable Gerd and was on the max. Dose. I was told by my gastroenterologist that there was nothing more he could do for me besides surgery that is how bad mine was. I took it for the first 4 weeks post op and then I was told to stop. I cannot tell you how happy I am that I no longer have Gerd at all and I no longer have to take that medicine. I am curious why some clinics keep you on longer. Mine told me the risk of ulcers is gone after the first 4 weeks and with RNY it should cure the reflux/Gerd issue.

11 years post op. I still take it. Didn't for the first 5 years, but then I got ulcers. Taking it keeps me from getting the ulcers.

I had been on Protonix for the past 7 years for horrible acid reflux. My doc had said I could discontinue after a month. I am almost a month post op and discontinued mine at 2 weeks out and have had no problems. One of the things is I broke the habit of eating near bedtime a couple of years ago and that helped considerably! Before than, I was eating dark chocolate and other no-no's right before bed every night!

Im 12days out and surprised my surgeon said to take it every other day for 1week then stop. To be honest I never took them faithfully to begin with. I have brief moments when I feel some acid but it's because im either bending over, sitting upright (smashing stomach), or laying down.

I was told that taking the medicine was actually to promote healing, the acid reduction was an added benefit, 90 days only though!

I was told that the Protonix was to promote healing, the benefit of reducing acid was just a nice side effect, and to only take it for 90 days!

I also had severe refux/Gerd & Barrett's Esophagus so I had not choice but to have the bypass. I was happy to hear that my Gerd will be gone but he wants me to stay on my aciphex for a year. I'm only 6 weeks out and this past week forgot to take it a couple of times, and I had heart burn and had to take a tums.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
