Dr. Miles - Alabama Weight Loss Surgery

@@Beautiful Mess and @Gammy10

Do you mind me asking what your total out of pocket cost was for self pay? I read on their website the all inclusive price is $11,900 but sometimes those figures can be misleading.

Also- What was the total time frame from your initial appointment to surgery date?

I am in TN and dealing with insurance nonsense and would rather just bite the bullet and pay OOP if I can do it for under $12k.

@ photogal85 Dr. Schmitt said the $11,900 was the total out of pocket. No taxes added, no other fees. Now you will have to pay for your first initial consultation which ran me $210. I think.

I have not scheduled the surgery yet but he said he could get to me in a few weeks if I wanted to go ahead and schedule.

That's awesome...I'm actually at a crossroads right now as I have found a dr in Murfreesboro, TN (45 min from me) that will do all inclusive self pay for 12,300. He said he can get me in for surgery on Feb 12. How cool is that?!?!

So now, I'm trying to decide if I want to pay the 12k and have it done in about a month or deal with meeting all the insurance requirements which will save me about $5k and have it done in June.....Trying to rational about saving the money but I'm ready to get this show on the road!

I opted for Dr. Miles because I wanted the earliest available appointment and it was him. My appointment is Monday, December 22nd. From what all I've read, they both seem very impressive. I have a running list of questions to ask. I'm curious what their requirements are for the preOp diet. I still have 6 months of insurance-required weight loss attempt, so it will be a while before I'm to the point of actually doing the preOp diet, but inquiring minds want to know lol.

I also would like to know what/if Vitamins they require postOp. Also, if they send me home with blood thinner injections. These are just a few of my questions. Like I said, inquiring minds want to know lol. :)

Hi Darby, I am also in AL and starting the 6 month supervised diet requirements for insurance. Good luck on your journey!

Hi Darby! I am in Alabama and just submitted for insurance approval. My surgeon is Dr. Schmitt. I am anxiously awaiting their response. This is my second attempt for approval. Three years ago my BMI was too low without three years of any comorbidities. Of course, due to more failed dieting, I am now three years above a BMI of 40. I see from your mention of insurance you have PEEHIP. Are you a fellow educator like myself? Good luck and best wishes, the 6 months will go faster than you think!

Yep, I am a teacher. Thanks for sharing your story. Dr. Miles' insurance person was emphatic that I would be denied, so I haven't been pursuing it any further. It will be 2017 when my "low" BMI is outside the 3 year range. I am trying (again) to lose weight on my own...otherwise hello 2017 I'll try to get approved then.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
