I was told I would not feel hungry for about 3 weeks after surgery by my doctor. Needless to say that was an untruth. I feel hungry every single moment of every single day. Anybody else bought that lie ? What to do ? I brush my teeth , take walks, drink extra fluids..... . Is this really what my life is going to be about from now on?

Yea not sure who come up with the whole line about not being hungry, but I was like you. How far out are you? If you can eat and your hungry then eat just make sure you do a little bit at a time.

Are you taking anything for acid reflux? If not that could explain your hunger. Also i was alway hungry at least so I thought until i moved to solid foods.

I wasn't hungry at all. 10 years out and I can still say true hunger is rare. Could it be "head hunger"? You really need to explore this possibility. Drink more, maybe chew gum. Maybe you're not getting emough Protein, which helps prolong time between hunger pangs.

I think everyone has very different outcomes for a similar experience, Homecie. I'm just shy of a month out and have experienced hunger too. However, I also realize that a lot of it was "head hunger"- hunger that we perceive because our former lives had us eating at certain times or in certain instances. For example, night time is very hard for me, because I'd been accustomed to snacking while I watched TV or did work for my job. I can't/won't do that anymore, and find myself thinking I'm hungry, when actually pouring a glass of iced tea does the trick quite nicely. (I read somewhere once too that our body can't tell the difference between hunger and thirst- try a drink first. I don't know how much or if I believe this, but it might be worth a try for you)

Being so soon out of surgery, (and I'm in no way a doctor or qualified to give medical advice) I'd suggest eating something small, low-calorie and tolerable when you're actually physically hungry. When we're healing from the recent procedure, many surgeons focus on just getting in enough Protein, which works out well, since protein is what satiates our hunger anyway.

It's hard to go through such a lengthy process, a nervewracking surgery, and possibly a painful recovery, only to find out that you're ravenously hungry and "can't eat anything". Getting in my liquids, taking deep breaths and getting out for walks (and away from food) helped me a lot in my first few weeks- I hope it will for you too

Um no. The potential dangers of rushing into eating foods and straining stitches far outweigh the inconvenience of being hungry temporarily, even if you feel like you could eat. You call your doctor and explain the situation and work it out with your doctor where maybe you can get something in your stomach that has more staying power if it's causing you physical hunger pains. Clear Liquids go right through you so yeah, they can be sucky because you are essentially sitting on an empty stomach. Usually you are not hungry for the first few weeks, but it's not universally true.

Just like the pre-op diet, the post-op phase is not fun. But it's temporary and you suck it up and deal with it. Stop watching the TV with all its food ads and that helps a lot. Now is a great time to take up a new, really time consuming hobby like photography that gets you away from food and distracted from head hunger. Once you move on to full foods you will be eating proper solid Proteins that will keep you full for hours.

I am 4 1/2 months post-op and I can honestly say that I have not felt hunger since the day before surgery.

I'm 4 months post-op RNY and never really felt hunger pains until this week. I don't know if it is because I started working out a bit more. But this is the first time I can hear my stomach rumbling.

I know wants you get a bit further along your hunger should hopefully go away. Best of luck!

I felt hungry all the time, too. But I've gotten my reflux meds tweeked & that feeling has gone away considerably. See if Tums helps the 'hungry' once in a while. I do still get genuinely hungry, but it's much less now.

I am 10months post op bypass and I can count on one hand the times I have felt hungry. It's a totally different feeling for me now than before. I deal with a lot of head hunger though.

I haven't been hungry at all. There are times when I know I need nutrients, but that's not hunger. Yesterday was 3 weeks. Nobody made any promises to me. I had a few moments of wishing I could eat a pizza, but it passed. I think your head is playing tricks on you. Good luck.

I never get growling or feel hunger pains like before. I just feel like a pang of hunger/thirst. It's nothing that lasts long, it just makes me aware that I need to eat or drink something. It's the weirdest sensation. Not really hungry, but knowing I need food.

At almost 6 months post RNY, I've not felt hunger. I often have to remind myself to eat. I sometimes find it hard to figure out what I want to eat, as I am not hungry, and am not craving anything in particular. I have had several times where I have waited too long between meals, and have bad hypoglycemic attacks. I'm trying to remember to carry some sort of protein with me for those times.

Well, I muddled through this faze and now don't feel hungry much. I started to really focus on protein, and water. It was just like night and day. It took the ole body a while for the dust to settle and make all right. I took everyone's advice and concentrated on protein, then water and it worked.

Then I should consider myself lucky 3 weeks post op.. And I still don't get too hungry and when I do.. Just a couple spoonfuls and I'm sated...
