No liquid diet no drain

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I wasn't on a liquid diet, I was put on a Protein sparing diet - basically a very low carb diet - and had a ham salad the night before my op in the hospital! I did however have a drain.

I'm in UK, so not sure if things are different here, but they shouldn't really be that different.

Is there anyone out there in sleeve world that was not put on a liquid diet preop? I just had to have clear liquids the day before. I also didn't have a drain...what is that for?

I was the same. I was advised to reduce calories pre-op, but no liquid pre-op diet.

A drain is place to drain off excess fluids. Sometime when you have a laparoscopic procedure done instead of that cavity healing from the inside out or bottom to the top, the outer layer closes up first and then Fluid builds up creating and abscess of infected fluids. In some cases a drain is put in so that doesn't happen. I had a drain because when I had had a previous surgery I developed an abscess. It was very deep. The doctor then had to lance that and pack it with sterile gauze. They did what's called "wicking". Basically the wound is packed with gauze and each say the wound is cleaned, the dressing changed to allow the wound to heal without closing on the outside until the inside is healed. My drained was pulled when I was discharged.

Thanks for explaining. The abcess sounds horrid.

It was worse than the surgery. The lancing was the most painful part. It had gotten quite deep. I then had daily wound care from a visiting nurse. Thankfully I didn't have that this time.

No liquid diet at Northwestern Memorial here in Chicago. You just low carb for two weeks pre-surgery. It was very Atkins-esque. I took it as permission to eat steak (I lost 18 lbs on this diet) Also no drain. And post-op you are only on liquids the two days you are in the hospital. You go home and are immediately on purees.

No liquid pre-op diet, just clear liquids the day before, Highland Hospital in Rochester NY. We were encouraged to follow the regular Bariatric diet. No drain either.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
