Hi Asher325, thank you. Congrats on your surgery date also! I have had more than 10 blood clots but thankfully have not had one for 11 years. :) I had a Greenfield filter put in about 16 years ago. My hematologist is having me bank my blood because I also have an unusual blood type. They will give me Heparin in the hospital and I will go home on Coumadin. I was taken off Coumadin about 10 years ago because I had a CMV and a bleeding problem. I have Factors V, VIII & IX. My surgeon said I may be in the hospital longer than most people to make sure that I am not having any clotting or bleeding problems. How many clots have you had? Hopefully you won't have any problems. :)

oh my gosh!! 10 blood clots on the past wow! Im so glad you haven't had one in a looong time. They better take very good care of you, especially to make sure you don't have any complications. Im sure they will! I am so excited for you! I had a massive blood clot in my leg last year, and a part of it broke off and went I to my lung. I was out on warfarin for a year then I was taken off of it after a year. Then about 7 mo later got 2 more blood clots in my lungs again. So now I on xarelto, most likely the rest of my life. Will you have to go in the hospital before the surgery to bridge off the thinners? I will pray everything goes perfect for you! :-)

@@Asher325 Thank you Asher. :) I am very thankful that I haven't had any clots recently! Oh no! Blood clots going to your lungs, that is so very scary!! :( Did you have a Greenfield filter put in? I had one put in to keep any clots from breaking off and going to my lungs or brain. I am currently on any thinners, but will be after surgery. I have the unusual genetic markers for both thrombophilia and hemophilia, they said it is really strange to have both problems. Thank you for your prayers. I will pray the same for you! I live in southern California. Where are you?

Hi @@waterlily22! No, I have never had the filter put in, there was never any talk of that actually. They seemed to be okay with me just starting on the blood thinners to help with future ones. I live in Missouri, its extremely cold here today!❄ Wish I was in California today! ????

Congratulations to all of you getting your December surgery dates!!! :)

I'm just wondering, how do you know if you are developing a blood clot? I'm scared about developing one and not even realizing it's happening. Are there warning signs? I feel for all of you who have been through it and pray you will all make it through smooth sailing.

Hey Brandyjune, I'm a nurse who is going to have mine in December also. Clots are tricky things, first off, let me tell you about prevention. As soon as you can, get up and start moving, pump your legs when you are in bed, wear the SC (sequental compression) hose they give you or the SCD's (a device that wrap around your lower legs and fill and release inflated air to help to keep your circulation good) they give you as much as possible when in bed. Most clots come from your blood pooling somewhere, from decreased circualtion, and movement.

Some can come from surgical sites. Sometimes you can feel a warmth, or pain/ache in your legs where a clot has lodged, shortness of breath, and extreem anxiety that something is wrong due to alterations in blood pressure, breathing and heart rate can also be a sign, but the unfortunate side is that sometimes when throwing a clot, no warning signs are given. This is not to scare you, but it's just the truth. Your doctor will most likely have you on lovenox, a blood thinner, that will help to prevent clotting. I'm sure you will be fine, think positive thoughts, and get this part of your life behind you. You got this!

Oh wow 10 blood clots??!!! I had blood clots in my lungs two yrs ago and my hemo Dr ran test n said I had to be on lovenox for a long time as a preventive cuz there was no reason why I had a PE. My surgeon was like she needs clearance from hemo dr for me to stop. She doesn't know why I have to still be on them. And the risk for bleeding will increase if I stay on them right after surgery :(

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
