Not bad!

Spent the day in emerg yesterday. Pain still under my left rib cage. All tests said I was good except there is still some Fluid in my abscess but not enough to worry about..Okay we will see!

That is not what got me. The attending physician asked me if I had Bariatric surgery. I said yes and he said so this abscess has been here a while then. I said yes.

Then he looked me up and down and asked when I had the surgery. I said almost 2 years ago...Hardly got the words out when he said, 'how much did you lose?' I said 211 lbs.

He replied, 'ummm not bad I guess.' in a drone voice....

What the H*ll! I was gob smacked. I did not expect him to do a dance of joy but it would have been nice if he had at least said how do you feel about that. Or are you happy you have lost that much. What would have been the magic number to get him to say terrific... What a idiot!

Amazing how many doctors don't have a good "bedside manner"... same principle applies to "common sense" which seems to be lacking, BIG TIME, in todays society...

you know and we know you have done exceptionally well... don't let that idiot get you down (and if I know you, you won't ...)

I wasn't there, but I would suspect he was being dry and sarcastic. Most doctors have a very dark, dry sense of humor. There's NO WAY someone couldn't be impressed with your weight loss numbers!

Especially ER docs are the most inexperienced in the entire hospital. And they are all generation Y or Z or what ever the heck is after the normal people who are used communications face to face. He would have rather texted or snap chat than actually spoken to you. It's not his fault, blame parents, society and his shotty medical school education which obviously let him skip out on the bedside manner lectures!

he should have said something like "wow, you are amazing!!"

"i'm really sorry you have been going thru so many problems"

unbelieveable that he (or anyone else) wouldn't say something extra nice at your weight loss

I was thinking maybe he misheard you - and thought 211 was your start weight, but the subsequent looking you up and down makes me think that wasn't it. Whatever- you have accomplished SO much! Regardless of what one doctor has to say about it... hope your abcess heals soon!

Girl, its true! I work with docs every day all day and they get younger and younger and as a profession it is showing. I've even had some residents and fellows jokingly consult me about how to "look" older. As baby boomers and older docs continue to age up it is creating a stark contrast in relating to patients and even receiving adequate care. Age and as we all know weight effects are how you are seen, viewed, heard and even treated as a patient. The tone was biting but the sentiment is true and well-documented.

I have had little or no support here since I had my surgery. Everyone who finds out in the medical field looks at me like I have lost my mind. They never treat me and always send me back where I got the surgery. I don't get it I really don't. I am in the public eye because of my complications. But no one seems to be interested in it all at all.

Even when I explained to him that I had complications he did not let me finish. He just said yah, yah. And I stopped talking!

It is really cold here if you have had WLS.

See, that's awful. Yes, medical professionals don't like to "touch" another persons/surgeons work , but was rude, unsympathetic and uncalled for. I work in the medical profession (for now) and I hold us to a higher standard of care.
