With the Gastric Bypass, what is the most common result after eating a small amount of sugar? Dumping or not dumping??. I am considering this surgery after having 2 LapBands slip. :(

No dumping occurs for me after I eat something that contains sugar.

I think if you are considering Bypass and also wondering how much sugar you can tolerate, then Bypass might not be the surgery for you. Dumping Syndrome is real and awful. Yes, there are a few patients who never experience dumping syndrome, but why would you want to risk finding out if you are one of them? Also, removing sugar and high carb foods needs to become a lifestyle change for any success with any weight loss surgery. I was completely addicted to sugar and carbs, so having Bypass was not a decision I made lightly. "Nothing tastes as good as being 60 pounds thinner feels!" And I'm not finished yet!!

Good luck to you as you make life changing decisions! This is a great forum to find answers.

For me, I get super sweaty and short of breath, nauseous, clammy, my heart races. Lasts about 15-20 minutes, and it is NOT pleasant!! Twice I've had severe cramps to go along with it...

I have not had any dumping experiences. I do not use sugar substitutes so I have had very small amounts of sugar along the way. I no longer crave sweets or fatty foods so therefore I have not tried eating them for fear I will get sick. I am trying to condition myself to believe that is what will happen even if it won't. I have noticed that foods that have a higher fat content and that I previously would have loved taste absolutely horrible to me now. I actually prefer more clean foods as they make me feel good. The thought of sweets or Desserts actually makes me sick to my stomach. I used to love sweets! I am quite thankful for this reaction.

Not sure if this is helpful or makes sense but I do think it has something to do with what I am telling my brain.

I've never really experienced dumping but if I eat something with too much sugar, I get reactive hypoglycemia. My blood sugar bottoms out quickly and i just feel crappy so I have to eat something to bring it back up. I try avoid this by limiting my sugar intake.

I just made a sugar free cake which sugar free frosting do you think that will bother me? I read somewhere that about 30 percent of the people who have WLS have a problem with dumping.

I have not had any dumping, but I have gone out of my way to avoid anything with a lot of sugar grams. Fresh/frozen pineapple is probably one of the highest sugar content foods I eat. But I don't eat it alone. I mix it with greek yogurt, danon light and lively. I have had a few sugar free items, like cake and it has not bothered me. I am also going along with the thought that sugar will make me dump, helps my head to think that. Good luck on your decision.

I guess it's true that we're all different in how our bodies react to the surgery. I can eat only small amounts of sugar if I don't want a dumping episode. Just this weekend I didn't pay attention to the sugar content of watermelon and I had dumping. I try to stay at no more than 5g of sugar at a time.

Many people actually find their tastes change after their bypass anyway and a lot of foods become too sweet for their tastes. It becomes a lot easier to avoid the sugars to begin with than it is with the band because the band doesn't take away the cravings one bit. The truth is there is no way of knowing if you will be a dumper until the surgery is done. I am not a dumper but the sugar alcohol substitutes make me sick, which is also common. You're also more likely to dump on liquids because they go right through you and overwhelm your intestines quickly, which is the whole basis of dumping. So a smaller amount of liquid sugar may cause dumping while a larger amount of sugar bound in fruit may not. There are variables. The glycemic index of a food, which is a measure of how quickly the sugar in something is released into your body, is really useful if you a dumper. Raw carrots and cooked carrots have essentially the same amount of sugar in them except cooked carrots release their sugar very quickly and can cause sugars to spike. Same with boiled vs. mashed potatoes. Steer away from foods that release their sugars quickly and that can help in the dumping situation.

I have not yet had an episode of dumping. I try to stay away from sugary foods as much as possible to avoid that. I do not use sugar substitutes so I do have to be very careful. I wonder if I just might be one of the lucky folks that will not suffer from dumping. I am not going to find out, I have been conditioning my body to believe it to be true because I want to change my lifestyle. If there was one type of food that I gravitated toward before surgery it was definitely sweets. I was not a big eater, simply loved my sugar. Now, I could care less if I ever eat sweets again.

I tried a tiny piece of three musketeers bar. Really tiny. I was curious what the affects would be. No pooping or throwing up. I felt ok at first but then my stomach started hurting. Sharp pains for about 30 minutes then stopped. Really not what I was expecting.

I've read that only 30% of people who have bypass will experience dumping.I love sugar but not willing to find out if I'm a part of that 30%.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
