Protein...You're making me sick.

Recommended Posts

Not to be a whiner (yes I do...) but i'm so sick of the all liquid rotation. I was sleeved on 10/7 and was on all liquids 2 weeks before, and now 2 weeks after. All the Protein powder drinks, ready-mades, unflavored...they are just making me gag and NOT want to drink.

I know i'm being dramatic. Hell, if I was reading this I'd say, "Suck it up!" But I think this has been the most difficult part so far.

Thanks for listening to the vent.

I hear you.... They became way too sweet for my liking. only a few more days until your menu expands. hang in there. hopefully that is the only problem you are facing post-op!

I completely understand! I hate the shakes, haven't been able to stand them since the surgery & I've tried a lot of them. I can choke it down but hate them. Hang in there, you're almost through it.

And that is why I hate whining. Recovery has gone great. I feel good 85-90% of the time. I just have to remind myself this part is temporary.

Completely agree! I can't wait to eat an egg. Or anything other than these Protein Drinks.

I can't imagine your pain. I'm one of the few people whose program did not include a 2 week liquid diet pre-op or weeks of liquid post op. I was on liquids for the two days I was in the hospital, and that was it. Went home and was immediately on purees. I still had to supplement with Protein shakes though. shakes that were fine pre-op tasted so gross post-op. They were sickeningly sweet. It was all I could do to choke down a shake to get my Protein in. And for me, purees were so gross. The texture was gross. I wasn't very hungry and didn't really want to eat until I was cleared for soft solids. At the time, I was not a member of this forum, so I only had my husband to mope to, and he really couldn't understand what I was going through.

So rant away!

I was sleeved Oct. 7th also. I can't stand the Protein shakes. I've tried several kinds also. I'm trying so hard to get in my 30grams a day. I'd rather drink Water. I guess because we've been stuck on liquids, puree sounds fabulous!!! I can't wait to have a scrambled egg with cheese or an avocado. lol I hate this nasty taste in my mouth!!! Hopefully, I can go to puree next week after I see my dr.

Hang in there...........I feel your pain!! =)

Ya the shakes are terrible. I was on the 2 week pre op liquid diet and hated it. I still hate them. I am on pureed and shakes now and as much as I hate the shakes the pureed food is worse. Im big on texture and pureed just gives me the willy's. 1 more week until solid foods for me.

Just hang in there you'll get through it.

After 9 days, my surgeon told me I could eat anything I could tolerate, just chew very well.

To the folks that hate their shakes, the ones by powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury & Syntrax nectar I found to be pretty good. I also heard good things about MuscleGen Genepro; it is recommended by Johns Hopkins. .

I was in the same boat as you. Had to do liquids 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after. I almost lost my mind. I regretted surgery. I was depressed and couldn't stand liquids. I made it through and this past Tuesday I was able to start puréed and cheese and eggs. It's been great! Take it slow and eat slowly. You'll get there soon!

I completely agree. Just make sure you're getting enough Water. I don't think anything appealed to me the first six weeks. I was so excited to be released to a normal diet at 6 weeks. Follow your doctor's advise, and know this too shall pass.

Thank you all you wonderful cheerleaders. :)

I have only tried the unflavored Syntrax Nectar. I know it's unflavored but I don't care, you can still taste the, I dunno, UNFLAVORED. It just makes me...blah.

I see the surgeon on Monday and I hope he says I can move to purees a few days early.

I know the feeling, I can also relate. I'm on full liquids for a few more days & Ive just had about enough of the Protein Shakes too. I can't stand syntax nectar! I purchased a sample pack & I'm sorry that I wasted my money. Hang in there. It will & does get better.

Puréed is theeee absolute worse! I can't hardly stand the only Protein Shake that I can tolerate (premier) anymore! I'm 3 weeks post op and now on any soft foods that I can tolerate. However, that's a chore as well????

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
