For as long as I can remember I have always had a faster than average pulse. With recent years and of course, continuing weight gain, it has increased. My average is 95bpm. When I am stressed or at the doctor's office it is usually up around 120. Has anyone had this? And has WLS helped it at all?

To be honest, I can't directly answer your question. I just hope you are seeing a cardiac specialist. My friend just had a pacemaker installed. She will have gastric sleeve surgery in November. I think the pacemaker will remove a lot of risk from her surgery due to the heart problems... just a thought.

I'm not seeing one. I've always had a fast pulse and none of my doctors have ever said anything about it.

@@jems Hi friend, I have this issue as well. My pulse has always been a bit fast and irregular. You should see a cardiologist if you are not seeing one already. When I was young, and hardly overweight by any degree my pulse was a bit fast and irregular. When I had my first child I was also still young but experienced a cardiac arrest right after child birth. The reason being I am told was because of large amount of blood loss, stress and arrhythmic heart rate.

As I gained in weight my numbers were similar to yours and every time I would enter the Dr. office they would keep me there for a long time to "rest" and see if my pulse rate would level off. They would run the EKG and see it all "normal" and off I would go.

One day I saw a new Dr. at my practice because I was sick, I had taken a decongestant which increases blood pressure and pulse rate also had some coffee that day as well. The poor guy thought I was having a heart attack and was calling the ambulance to bring me to the hospital when my cardiologist also in the same office said hold on where is this patient...he comes in the room and says Oh it's you Hi. Call off that ambulance she's fine!!
He is very familiar with my condition and knew this was no emergency though the scare the other Dr. was giving me was getting close to starting heart failure :)

Since losing weight, my pulse rate and HBP are much better. I also work out regularly and do cardio mostly walking and I don't push it too far. You need to know your limits and not get the heart rate pounding but keep it going for long intervals and build up that muscle just like you would your biceps.

I will always have an irregular beat, I was born with it and I may always have HBP it's hereditary for the most part, but losing weight and working out is a great way to help take the stress off your heart and your body and your mind as well.

Get yourself to the cardiologist, and get medication if you need it. I take Edarbi which regulates my heart rate and keeps my HBP under control as well, we have to take care of ourselves in all ways.

Hiya Lisa. When I was middle and high school it was around 80bpm. When I was in the military they checked it out and said I was fine. No irregular beat found. My blood pressure is usually 116/75. Even when I was pregnant I maintained my blood pressure. Just always had the fast pulse. I don't know why. I find that when I am in better shape, it lowers, but not by much. I will ask my doctor about seeing a cardiologist the next time I see him. Thanks for the reply. And I have freaked out a new doctor before too, not that bad though. But your story made me laugh. :) glad to hear that your losing weight has helped some. I do plan on doing everything I can to better myself, definitely including exercise with my limits. (I have a heart rate monitor for exercise)

I have it, but I haven't had surgery yet. I am on meds for it and my cardiologist wants to do an ablation to fix the problem. More than likely we have the same thing. You do need to get checked cause over time it will tire out your heart. I have had it when I was skinny and still have it as large as I am. He says weight doesn't have an issue in this, but signed off on my surgery because it will over all benefit me. I may have to have the procedure done because my meds is an extended relief and I can't take that for 6 months. I am currently on a 30 day event heart monitor so he can evaluate how I am doing off my meds and see what can be done.

I have developed bouts of bradycardia and tachycardia after surgery. My HR goes a slow as 30 beats a minute and as fast as 160 a minute. I have been passing out. I do go to a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist. I am scheduled for a tilt table test. I will be have an ep study afterwards. I am also going to see a neurologist to see if my bariatric surgeon damaged my vagus nerve during my RNY. This nerve controls HR and BP. Also some digestive stuff. I suggest going to a cardiologist as well. You only get one heart take care of it.

before losing wt. I was tachycardic. my pulse was irregular and around 120 on a regular basis. sept. before surgery I had heart failure. this is when my husband became a big supporter of wls. he watched his wife die for 12 seconds. my heart converted on its own. I was on medication for this and had episodes prior to surgery. since surgery I have just the opposite. my pulse rate is 47 normal. and I am off of all heart medications except Lasix. still have some problems with congested heart failure where Fluid is entering my lungs. losing wt will only help you but you should have a cardiologist clear you prior to surgery.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
