Frustrated. PreOp diet

Recommended Posts

I was really hoping to have a better first few days on the pre diet. I feel so tired and like I have the flu and my wife turns to me and says "I'm beat, can you make dinner tonight. Its just pancakes" Breakfast for dinner is my favorite BTW. No honey I'm not making dinner. I will be in bed sipping on my chicken broth. Gees!

Sorry to hear that. It's definitely not easy... But keep reminding yourself it's for the better and you are strong. I have been pretty fortunate that I have not been hungry. Just head hungry but the chicken broth seems to curb that.

OMG, I can't believe your wife asked you to make her dinner when you can't eat it! WTF?

The pre-op diet is tough, depending on the guidelines you have to follow. Mine had me only getting 450 calories a day so I was dead on me feet all of the time. It definitely sucked pretty hard-core, but I got through it and it's becoming a distant memory. Hang in there!

I understanding your pain and frustration. I had a difficult time during my preop stage as well and my mother asked me to cook a full fledge meal one evening! My hubby told me not to worry about dinner but to make myself have will power, I ended up cooking, turkey chops, rice and vegetables for them then went to bed. I'm happy to say that I made it through and you will too! I am now as of today 1 week post op! Good luck on your new life's journey.

Things have gotten better. Still pretty weak but the hunger pains are better. My wife made me home made chicken broth yesterday. It was yummy.

I'm sorry you were feeling sick. I actually think this is a common symptom of detox and fat being released around your liver and I'm glad wifey gave you a pass. And her request may not have registered to her as insensitive. But this did get me thinking about my role as personal chef in my home and what will be required without causing to much discombobulation in my home. Maybe I can switch duties or pick up some extra slack in other areas outside the kitchen because preparing food is when I typically consume the most unconscious calories.....I don't want to appear like narcissistic, that can rear it's ugly head during previous diets and weight loss attempts and my family is over me.

My husband is the cook in my house and we don't have any kids. Since I started my pre-op diet (I'm now a month post-op) we typically just do our own thing for dinners. There are a couple of our old standby dinners that I can sort of eat now that I'm on soft foods. My husband makes an Indian dish with chicken in the slow-cooker and I was able to have that, just not over rice like I used to and in MUCH smaller quantities that I used to. Last night we had Jack Daniel's Pulled chicken (comes in a microwavable package), which was one of the old meals we used to have together. I just porting our my half into two servings and stored one in some Gladware to have later and ate the other serving out of a coffee cup. My husband obviously still had his on rolls.

Other than the couple of meals that he makes that I can eat, he still makes the same things in the same quantities that he used to when we were both eating together, and saves the leftovers that would have been my half to have another night. It's working out pretty well so far. There have only been a couple of times when he's made something that used to be one of my favorites and I've been sad that I couldn't eat it with him.

The one time that was SUPER hard was when he brought home leftover pizza from work. As soon as he started reheating that in the oven, I had to go up and lock myself in the bedroom. I couldn't even handle the smell of it, much less watching him eat it! pizza is BY FAR my favorite food in the whole world and I just can't be near it right now without wanting to cry.

I hear you. I am still making dinner for my family every night while on my pre-op. It is not easy, but I'm getting used to it. I'm a stay at home mom for now, so I think making dinner is just part of my job. @@JamieLogical pizza is also my favorite, and my whole family ate it the first night of my diet. It saved me from cooking but OMG it was 100 times harder to handle. I got through it. This is temporary. We can do this! Hang in there, @kbuska.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
