Sleevers who have been diagnosed with Bile Reflux

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved back in feb of 2014. Ever since, I have struggled with my stomach feeling upset when I don't have something in it. Also, Water makes me nauseous.

Two months ago, my surgeon performed a scope and found I have bile reflux. We have tried the common drugs to try to help (bile sequestration, acid inhibitors) and nothing has helped. She also prescribed Sucralfate to coat the stomach and help with the upset feeling. Hasn't helped. She tells me there is not much else to do other than performing a gastric bypass.

Would like to know of any sleevers who have bile reflux and how they are coping? I am eating about every 2-3 hours just to help minimize the sick feeling on the tummy. Also, find my diet very limited, since many foods such as meat, fruits and veggies cause my stomach to wrench. So, eating allot of yogurt, dairy, etc which seem easier to digest.

I have lost 80 pounds, but gained 7 lbs back. I am really concerned about how I am going to be able to keep the weight off while trying to cope with this bile reflux issue!

Thanks in advance for anyone who has a sleeve and is dealing with bile reflux!

Hi,

I am in the same boat you are in. They stopped giving me sucralfate and the like for a long time. The problem was making the nutritional issues worse. By this, this is not my surgeon. I am a lot farther out than you so I dont have the weight loss available to me without it being an issue.

There is little I can do other than doing the same thing you are. I have food intolerances, quite a bit, so yogurt and dairy is not something I can use to help.

A bypass has been known to work in many. Sad to say that it is not an option in my case because I have no surgeon. On top of that, with the other GI issues I have, I don't know if that is going to work. Realize that the reflux puts you at higher risk for esophageal cancer, so you do need to consider that.

If I can help in any other way, and you want it, feel free to PM. I help people in any way I can, no matter it is public or private.

I have bile reflux, gastritis, severe Gerd. Surgeon wants to revise to bypass.. but I won't and my insurance won't pay anyway. I was self pay for the sleeve. I need to do something but I don't want to have the bypass. I have no clue what I will do. I'm on carafate as well and dexilant. It helps, but not much.

I have had issue with this also, I am about three months postop. I have figured out that if I eat late it is worse, my last meal is around 7pm no later and I started taking OTC Zegrid about an hour before bed it seems to help with the symptoms thru out the next day. Also stay away from sweets, as those sugars break down it makes it worse, this includes bread. If I have any bread it is with Breakfast and stay away from it the rest of the day. So far I am somewhat successful if I stick with it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
