Having Babies after the Band!

Recommended Posts

Hi! I have yet to be banded, but being only 26 I definitly want to have babies within the next 3-5 years. Can anyone share their experience of getting pregnant after being banded? I know its possible, because the band is adjustable, I just wondered how it actually went for some of you. I searched all over the site but haven't found anything about those of you that had a baby afterwards. THANK!:)

Wow I am in the same boat. I wish someone would answer. I am currently at 300 pounds and would like to one day have children. I have heard that they can adjust it so that the baby can get the proper nutritions. I am sure that it is something that they talk to you about at your consultation. Let me know the answer if you have experienced it though....

I havent meet anyone who has had a baby after banding, but my doctor told me that lots of people do and there seems to be no problems they just adjust your band. I want to have another baby and they told me it's ok to get pregnant 1 year after banding but they perfer you wait 2. It will be alot easier to conceive after your weight has gone down. Good luck

Search for "pregnancy," "pregnant," etc. It has come up a few times and I think we've had some fairly long threads of people's experiences.

I hope to be pregnant sooner than later and my surgeons indications are that, iof your restriction is such that you need an unfil to get enough calories in, then he will give a slight unfill but a complete unfill isn't needed unless you have morning sickness, and even then a fill can be given once it has passed.

I've heard very mixed messages about weightloss/nowightloss while pregnant. A lot say it's a big no-no, but I know a won of women, overweight and heathyl weight, who weighed quite a bit less after delivery than before getting pregnant.

Wheetsin is right, there are a ton of threads here about this very subject. Use the Search function on the blue toolbar near the top of the page, and I'd suggest you click on Go Advanced, then look for thread titles with words like Wheetsin suggested in them. Pregnancy or pregnant or band baby or band babies or having baby.

My doc makes you sign something saying you won't get pregnant within 18 months of being banded. I am pretty sure it's just to cover his patootie if you do get preggers before that and the very rare thing happens and something goes wrong. Though I have heard of many many successful band pregnancies.

Thanks Wheetsin! I did find a few things, but not much. If anyone else reads this and has an opinion or an expeience to share please do! My husband and I will be married for 3 years this fall, so we are not in any hurry to have a baby, but in the near future.

I debated having this surgery because I thought I wanted a baby right now, rather than having to wait 12-18 months. But, I came to the conclusion that I am going to do this for me first! Create a healthier me before I take on being a mommy!

Thanks Faithmd! I did the advanced search and found TONS more! Looks like there shouldn't be any problems getting pregnant in the future! :clap2:

I don't know the location of the thread, but I know there is at least 1 bandster on the forum who is currently banded and pregnant. Maybe 2.. I can think of someone talking about infection with the port and not being able to take antibiotics because they're pregnant.. and then someone else I don't remember complications. Hopefully, if you can't find the thread, they'll pop in here ;)

But for what it's worth, I talked to my surgeon about all of this pre-op, because I am planning to have kids in about 2 years. He gave me the rundown on what to expect.. told me right off I'd need to work closely with OBGYN and him to get the proper nutrients to the baby, and after that it's pretty much like any other pregnancy. He also emphasized, of all his patients, women get more fertile as they lose weight, and he's had women who got pregnant in the first 6 months because they were convinced they were infertile and ended up being fertile after shedding some weight.. So he kept telling me.. USE PROTECTION FOR AT LEAST 18Months! Said it's complicated to be pregnant and early in the surgery because you're still adjusting yourself, not needing the stress of adjusting with another person inside of you. Makes sense!

Ok, well I guess I will reply. I just don't look on here very often anymore. I was banded in July of '05 and love my band, even to this day. My husband and I decided to start trying to have a child together in July of '06 so I stated getting myelf off of birth control and by September was completely off and was pregnant in October. I am scheduled for my c-section on the 28th of June.

I have actually done excellent with my band during my pregnancy. I had my saline taken out of the band in November so that I could eat more. Don't know that I am really able to eat a lot more. I am almost 31 weeks pregnant and have only gained 6 lbs. The baby is growing great and I have had a great pregnancy other than the heartburn.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me at kim_mcneely@hotmail.com as I don't get to check the forum as often as I would like.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
