Complications....so broken and sadden

Recommended Posts

Ummm ... even a small pin hole can leak things out. You have more patience that I do. I admire that.

I would pray for you, that really bites.

I know someone who had a leak from one of the two bariatric surgeons in the group I was in and they switched to the other doctor.

They are going to do one of 3 things. Either a Rue n Y or a by pass. Either will fix the problem. I know..been there done that! On to different complications now! :)

well i am waiting on my surgeon and GI doctor to get back with me after getting together and going over all my labs and results.

I really miss dinner time. I miss eating what I want...sometimes I am excitied for what is to come once all this is over, but I'm so sick of TPN and want to eat and drink so bad...

I know it will only be a short time before I will be able to get back to normal...i guess i'm just ranting right now.

Rant on! I want to learn from others. You are not going to find surgeons divulging these things. Each person has something to add.

Besides, having been on TPN and having a wild GI tract, I can well sympathize with your position.

I had my sleeve done on 6/13. I like you did well for a week or so. Then I got nauseated and a fever so they did a bunch of different scans and they found a leak. I was admitted to the hospital and put on iv antibiotics. I wasn't allowed anything by mouth at all. I was so thirsty. They put in a picc line and started me on tpn and sent me home. My mom had to do everything for me. I was so weak and depressed. Well next thing I know I had another fever so back to the hospital I went only to find out I had a picc line infection. So I was in the hospital for another 8-10 days. They decided to put the picc line in my other arm and send me home and guess what it got infected too and I also got sepsis so they had to put me in icu. My bp was so low I almost died but God wasn't through with me yet. They then sent me home with a tube that went up my nose and down my throat to my stomach. This is how I got my tpn. The tube came out of my nose eight separate times in my sleep. Everytime it happened I had to go back to the hospital which is an 1 1/2 hr. drive to get the tube reinserted. They weight just fell off. I lost 120 lbs. in 8 mths. I always felt hungry and I cried alot I got very depressed. When I got to start eating I ate whatever I wanted which was a BIG mistake!!! I have gained 69 lbs in 7 months. Im so disappointed in myself. I did this to better my health and I almost died 3 seperate times. Then I go back to bad eating habits. I wish you all the best. Hang in there.

Nanna it sounds like you had a really hard time. How are you doing, both physically and mentally? You have been thru a lot. What could we do to help you? We can talk about what to eat and the like but I think the issue is more that you were depressed, feeling deprived and then ate the emotions you had. Did the doctor at any point suggest helping you? That's what I don't understand - unless they're like my bariatric surgeon.

Have you considered attending Overeaters Anonymous? I don't understand why you would have gone back to your old essaying habits and it sounds like you don't either. My advice would be to seek out some sort of counseling .

First off, I'm so sorry. Secondly, I'm going to share with you all my complications and trust me, with time it does get better.

1 August 5, 2014 - gastric sleeve surgery

2 Since August I've been in the ER a total of 7 times and combined hospital stays totaling 56 days

3 My stomach collapsed to the size of a "spring in a ball point pen"

4 They tried to balloon my stomach - did not work.

5 They placed two stents in my stomach which my body tried to reject them.

6 The stent moved and blocked food intake, therefore throwing up again another surgery to re-position them.

7 3 - weeks later they removed stents and my stomach went back to the size of a spring.

8 I've been depressed, crying from all the pain, very weak, throwing up everything I've ate

9 I hired a energy healer to come to my house - not sure if that worked.

10 Another surgery to place the stents back in.

Finally my immediate family was so scared and pissed, they hired a doctor to come into my house for a week straight. The doctor placed me on a STRICT regimen - I had to track everything that goes into my body and what comes out of my body including urine and BM (bowel movements). I was on 30cc of pedialyte for the first hour then the second hour I had to drink 30cc of Protein and I could only sleep for 8 hours then when my 8 hours were up I had to set my alarm on my phone every hour. I did that for the first two days, then on the 3rd day I did 60cc of pedialyte and juice then the following hour was just 30cc of Protein like Optifast. That has kept me out of the hospital from dehydration.

Anyway, I'm still on the strict regime. I'm feeling better - I'm starting to get color back in my face and I'm not as weak. I have not been back to work since August. This has been a complete nightmare. You may want to talk with your doctor about that. I'm also on Neurontin (Gabapetin 300mg) Carafate to coat my stomach and protonix to prevent acid reflux, Zofran to keep me from throwing up and pain medicine.

Again, I'm so sorry and please know you are not alone. Please keep your chin up and there is light at the end of the tunnel. To date, I've lost 95 pounds and if I lose any more I'll look sick.

im so sorry to hear this happened to you. it is not easy going through complications. I felt my world was over and couldn't believe i had done that to myself. Now on the other end of it and im finally feeling fine.

I am off the TPN, PICC line is out and im eating regular foods. Still trying out new stuff and I have become very very picky about what I eat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
