If you are eating enough? Too much? Too little? I just started puréed today I had my surgery Monday August 28, 2014. I am feeling great! I'm down 30 pounds but I feel like I'm scared to eat because I'm not hungry so how will I know i'm full?

I don't feel hunger either usually.... when I was first out from surgery and on liquids and pureed, I just ate small amounts. I didn't really feel hungry or full at that time. So, I just measured out a fourth of a cup or maybe half (after the first few weeks) and I just ate that much. I try to eat 6 times... Breakfast, lunch, dinner and Snacks between and a night snack. My Snacks and meals don't look that different... all Protein.

Work on getting in your protein... if you get the 60 grams of Protein (or however much your doctor or NUT says) you probably won't have room for much more anyway. My NUT said to just focus on the protein and not worry so much about calories. So far, it's working great for me.

And, make SURE you're getting enough liquids... drinking all the time except for the 30 minutes before and after eating.

Best wishes!

@ gingersnaps; how did you know to drink 30 mins before and after your meal? Did your Dr tell you before you're surgery? Im just curious because I haven't got that information just yet. I have a mandatory education class on the 9th and I'm wondering if they'll tell us that day. Any who, Im just curious to know.

Thanks

If you eat too much, you body will react very negatively. Generally it will become painful.

After a gastric bypass (RNY) your body is essentially feeding off you stored body fat. It is very important that you follow the requirements for Vitamins, Protein and liquids. They will keep your body going through the early phases.

@rockyroad It's one of the rules I was told. Not to drink 30 minutes before a meal or 30 minutes after. The meal should take about 30 minutes, so that's 1-1/2 hours of no drinking. From what I understand there are a couple of reasons... You need to fill up the stomach with food to get that full feeling and stay feeling full. If you have a drink with the meal, you fill up with liquid, too, which doesn't sustain the full feeling. It also washes the food down faster, again making you feel hungry again sooner.

I think it's a very common restriction and I'm sure you'll hear about it sometime during your education classes or meetings with the surgeon or NUT (nutritionist).

Best wishes during the entire process!

What type of puréed Protein do u eat to hit your 60 grams a day? My surgery is 10 days away n I wanted to make and freeze some puréed meals ahead of time?

I just use Protein Powder to make me shakes. Have never been one to puree meats etc... i use Bariatric Advantage Protein powder and use 2 scoops per shake which gives me 27 g of protein in 1 shake. So i only need 2 then maybe a yogurt to hit 60 a day. Also sometimes i add a teaspoon of fat free Peanut Butter to the shake for that lil extra protein. chocolate peanut butter shskes are good :) i also use Premier Protein already made shakes they have 30g a shake and taste pretty good for that much protein.

I just had my two week follow up and was concerned about eating. I am not hungry at all. My surgeon said thus was normal. So I am continuing with liquids. He said not to eat unless I felt hungry and so far the liquids are satisfying. He said you will eventually start to feel hungry and trying fluids won't be enough. I do have a Protein Shake and my Vitamins. How long has anyone gone on just fluids?

This is something I wonder about of. I am 10 months out, and am trying to eat mindfully. It is so hard to listen to your body. Sometimes I graze, bad niki, but most times I try to pay attention. The hardest part is to not let yourself get too hungry. I seem to be missing the cue from my body that tells me I am hungry vs "now I have been to hungry too long and want to eat everything" lol

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
