Pre Op Liquid Diet Ideas...

Recommended Posts

Hi all, happy Sturday!

I started my pre-op liquid diet yesterday, and two days in I'm sick of it, lol! I had some chicken broth for "dinner" yesterday because after a day of Protein Shakes, I was craving something salty. Also, I think I've always known that part of my food compulsion has to do with the feeling and texture of foods, and this is really testing that. Having a break from it for a month or so will definitely do me good, but I'm thinking about it constantly right now.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks for coping with the pre-op diet? I'm using Bariatric fusion protien powders, and I do love the flavors I bought, but I can see them getting old fast. Oh, and I did try mixing the unflavored powder in the chicken broth and it was HORRIBLE. It caked all up and didn't dissolve, so there were giant powder chunks in it. Nasty.

Anyway, I'm open to any and all tips!

Thanks,

Ginnie

It probably clumped up because the temperature of the liquid was over 140 degrees.

To add flavor variety, try adding Torani or DaVinci sugarless syrups.

The "liquid" pre-op diet plan given to me allows a small amount of mushy whole grains for Breakfast in the morning, some yogurt (with flavorings, Sweet N' Low added), and 1/2c. sugar free applesauce.

There is also a good book, "The Bariatric Foodie Guide to Perfect Protein shakes."

Good luck!

Definitely get PB2 which is powdered Peanut Butter. It is delicious with chocolate and vanilla! I only used a little not 2T. Also you can get different favors in the seasoning section like banana, coconut, almond. Just add a pinch until you whip it and then you can add more as needed. You can also add Crystal Lite to vanilla. I loved adding orange - it was like having a creamsicle! How long is your preop? Best to you for surgery and a speedy recovery. :)

I had a 2 1/2 week pre-opp diet. I've heard of some people doing just a few days, so it is really just what your doc prefers.

Not to be discouraging, but I just suffered through it. I was starving. The food and carb withdrawal sucks.

I too quickly got sick of the Protein shakes. Ended up drinking only 3-4 a day when I was allowed 4-5. I was allowed V-8 and Tomato Soups, so that helped.

The good news is, it gets much better after surgery and is totally worth it. You will not always feel this hungry. When I was on pre-opp it was torture to be around people eating real food. Not a problem now.

Hang in there. It sucks, but you can do it.

Best of luck! It is an incredible journey. But so totally worth it! I lost 22lbs on my 2 week preop diet! I love PB2 also & can use Torani sugar free Syrup. Unjury makes a chicken Soup Protein, but I honestly didn't like it. Like the others said, you basically just get thru it. I really think the first 4 or 5 days is the hardest. Then your body is kind of detoxed off of carbs. Post op is easier.

I totally "cheated" on my pre-op diet, but with healthy, low carb things, like soy nuts, cheese cubes, etc. I was thrilled to hear from my hubby after surgery that my surgeon told him my liver was tiny which is the whole point of the diet, to shrink your liver!! So I guess what I'm saying is that if you're craving something to chew (which I was) just make it something low carb and high Protein, and you'll probably be okay!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
