Trouble swallowing pills?

Recommended Posts

I am 3 days post-op & I am nervousness to swallow any pills. The one prescription I have in pill form is Prilosec. It's a capsule, so I have mixed it with sugar free Italian ice...but I am wondering if I should just give it a shot & try to take the pill whole.

Any advice?

I was sleeved yesterday and last night they started to give me pills for pain. Came home today and was told to continue to take all my medications I was taking before surgery. Have downed about 6 pills so far. Just be careful how much Water you take it with. If intake too much water with the pills it feels like it gargles going down and then I have to burr. Hoping taking the pills gets easier soon.

my doctor told me to crush my pills and they gave me liquid pain meds. Might wanna ask about that. That was very stressed not to swallow pills

I was told to open capsules and crush pills until my first post op visit which was at 2 weeks. The. Was told continue to the 1 month mark.

I think you're supposed to crush your stomach can't digest those things just yet.

Swallow with yogurt or whatever but straight crushed always gave me worse acid then ever

pills post op have been no problem, until today. I got some bariatric Vitamins prescribed by the doctor to eliminate all of the other supplements I was taking (except calcium). I opened the bottle any saw they they are as big around as pennies and as thick as a pencil. I took the first one and it got hung up in my throat. I kept taking small sips of my shake until it finally dissolve enough to go down. That was uncomfortable, so I located my pill cutter and cut several of them in four pieces. I will have to take four pieces for a dose, but at least they will go down now.

I have taken the pills since the day after surgery. The guide was the prescription Prilosec capsule is the biggest pill to swallow whole. If bigger split it.

I take 4 capsules at one time each morning. But I never had an issue swallowing Water. I never had to sip.

So try it and you will find out what works for you.

Prilosec capsules can be opened and mixed with yogurt. I have even mixed mine with Jello and just stirred it around.

I take an anti-depressant. It is a small pill but is VERY bitter if chewed. I guess I can crunch it up and just choke down the bitterness but I plan to ask my physician about this on my pre-op visit. I forgot to ask him previously...

Is this a Vitamin that dissolves? I have bariatric Vitamins in this shape and they dissolve in your mouth.

I'm 4 months out and I still don't swallow pills. Prilosec I open it over a spoonful of Water and just drink. I'm having a hard time with the dissolvable vitamins..they're disgusting. I'm thinking of going to regular vitamins and crushing them. No way would I try it whole.

I'm 2 months out and don't swallow any pill whole. I crushed my bp meds until I was 4 weeks out, and now I break it up in 1/4. I also open capsules.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
