Urbanlamb - Great job on the list. Cool to see all of us listed and can see who has the same date as you.

I start my pre op liquid feast in the morning. LOL. I am so ready to get it going. Taking before pics and measurements tonight. Getting very excited, and it is really starting to become real to me that this is happening.

Take care all

Laura

33 more days!!! I have a pre op appointment with my pcp, an appointment with a nurse practitioner at the surgeon's office, pre-op testing at the hospital, my EGD on aug 6th and last but not least my 2 week pre op diet starts aug 11th! I've received my letter from the bariatric center that I was approved and my surgeons office called with my approval today. I started this journey on January 6th this year at the information meeting at 375 pounds... Here I sit excited so much I could burst! I've had 6 visits with the nurse practitioner at the bariatric office, a psych appt, 3 group meetings, 2 meetings with the dietician and on the 26th of this month I've been smoke free for 4 months. I'm also down 85 pounds pre-op. I count my blessings every day for this opportunity..

Finally had my LAST consultation yesterday -- nutritionist -- and got approval to proceed to next step. (I had proactively already tracked all my food / exercise over the last 6 weeks on My Fitness Pal and walked in with those MFP reports.)

Next step, insurance approval. Doctor's insurance person has already said that should be a slam dunk, given my insurance and comorbidities.

Then the surgeon schedules my surgery, I start the pre-op diet, and ...

DA DAH!

Surgery and "the sleeved side" is starting to get real. And weird. (You all know what I mean.)

I did a list of everyone who has posted their surgery date. I thought it'd make it easier to see who is your 'surgery twin', and also so that as the month progresses, we can encourage each other and keep track of how we're all doing.

*hugs*

Haha!

It's to strengthen your lungs. Google tells me that having surgery in the chest or abdomen increases your chances of having breathing difficulties or developing pneumonia and "deep breaths help keep your lungs clear of secretions that can lead to infections. Deep breathing also helps improve the function of your lungs so that they deliver as much oxygen to the rest of your body as possible, which speeds up the recovery process." I think balloons are just the poor-man's spirometer.

Although now I wonder if this is just a sucker test and when they find me in a house full of 420 balloons, I will have qualified.

Ahha! That makes alot of sense. My surgeon didn't say anything about exercising my lungs which would probably be smart since I have asthma. I think I'll try that as well. At least if I have a house full of balloons I can blame it on my son :P

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
