Been There Done That

I am starting the process from band to sleeve, I was band in 2005. I had thought about the revision last year and I backed down from it because I was afraid of another surgery, I didn't have any guidance and didn't know what to expect. I am at a point were I am very disappointed with the results of the band like I see many of us here are, so I decided to contact my Dr office once again to continue the process of getting the sleeve. I hope I can get some answers and support here. I am wondering if I will have to have the band removed first then go back and get the sleeve? I am wondering if I will have to do another upper GI, I had one 5 months ago? I am wondering if I will have to another evaluation and scope, I had this done last year before I chicken out? Any answers would help, and I'd like to find a buddy here because I am feeling I need the support because of fear of doing this all over again with no results, I hope I am not being to forward with all these questions.

Had my band removed and sleeved all at once and it worked out very well. I chickened out too and did not need another scope. Surpassed docs goal in less than a year after failing miserably with the band. You've got this!

I am in your situation. I was banded in 2008 at 213 pounds and have not seen the results I was expecting. I find that if the band is tight enough to eat small portions (at dinner) then I can't eat healthy fruits or vegetables because it is too painful and I'll just PB. If my band is lose enough to eat fruits and veggies comfortably, then my portions are very large and it takes big meals to feel full, as well as terrible heartburn. I too am considering the sleeve, but am concerned that I won't lose any weight because of other stories I read from band to sleevers. Apparently, from what I've read, if you have had the band, then the sleeve doesn't work as well for you. I am currently 180 pounds and run marathons. I follow a high Protein diet, but my goal is to weigh 150. I cannot get there with my band. I would love to be your buddy on this journey. I too am still contemplating revision surgery.

Thanks Tulum, yes please I'd like that and it sounds like you are very close to your goal. This is very nerve wreaking, but will see it through. I lost 58lbs with the band and have kept it off, but have struggled these pass 9 years trying to get rid of 60 more lbs, I am at 4cc's with my band and that's the tightest, I can eat anything except beef. I am looking forward to see what my Dr says next Wednesday.

Hi, I'm also considering the revision. I'm actually in the process of getting the sleeve. I had to get an upper GI, have a psych eval and also nutritionist appt. I spoke with the coordinator of my center and he said my surgery date will be in July just as long as I'm approved. Please pray for me. I failed miserably with the lapband, I'm back at my pre surgery weight, we can be buddies too, how soon are you looking to get sleeved?

Tynoodles11, I definitely feel you on the disappointment with the band. I am not sure of my date yet, I am just getting started so I am sure I will have to do another GI, psych, and see the nutritionist before I get a date. Thanks a bunch and yes we can definitely do this

You sound like me girliegirl, I have been battling with myself over it until I told myself I will not know unless I try because I did the same when I went through the band process. I would love for you to follow me and hope that helps you with making your decision.

Oh man do I know how you feel...I have been trying to do this on my own as well with the band, from workouts, to boot camp, to diet pills, to herbalife, to body by Vi, it's like a never ending circle of the same ole. So I told myself if I am going to try and try again, I might as well try something more permanent if I'm going to continue this weight loss circle, I may as well try the sleeve. I started this journey because of my esophagus and the lining of my stomach, so I may as well try to finish it with and try the next step to permanent weight loss. I am adding you as my friend and I think we can follow each other through the message board as friends.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
