New guy saying hi + Question....

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am new here and just saying hi. I am a 39yo male and have my sleeve operation scheduled for mid-June. After many years of yo-yo weight loss and a sedentary job I am biting the bullet and going with the sleeve. My BMI is 49 so definitely need to do something but luckily am healthy on most other counts (non smoker, no signs of diabetes, no fatty liver or heart problems yet).

I have a quick question if people are happy to comment;

I have been on a pre-surgery liquid diet of 3 slimfast products a day (plus broth and diet jelly) for 6 days and have lost 3.4kg. Does this sound about right? I would have thought given the extreme nature of the diet I should lose more like 5kg in this time, expecially considering a good amount would be Water retention. I am struggling to drink over 2L water, managing more like 1.6L. Any thoughts?

Thanks all and good luck to everyone here. Remember "A goal without a plan is just a dream"...

Cheers, Firefly2000

Hi Firefly!

My son is due to have surgery soon and it's good to see another guy on the forum.

I never did use slim-fast because it has a high carb/lowprotien ratio. That may be why your weight loss is not as big as you may want. Did you mean diet Jello or Jelly? If it's Jelly, take a look at the carbs on what you are eating. A better Protein shake would be something like Muscle Milk light or Premiere Protein ready made shakes. They have a very low carb/high protein (premiere has 30 grams of protein per shake) ratio. If you try to stay below 6 grams of carbs per meal you should be dropping weight super fast. If you get bored with the flavors of the shakes nectar makes some really awesome flavors of shakes, but you have to mix them yourself with either Water, non-fat milk, or almond milk.

Hope I helped a little. Good luck on your surgery!

Thanks for the reply!

Sorry I got my brands mixed up its actually OPTISLIM I am using which is an ultra low calorie diet - shakes, Soups and bars. I have 3 of these products a day, adding up to approx 480 calories with about 90gms carbs in total. OPTISLIM is the brand my surgeon suggests but it sounds like the carbs are much higher than you yours.

I'm also eating the sugar free Jello (we call it jelly here in Australia) and some broth and Water. Sounds like I need to question them on the carbs levels

Sounds about right it may pick up as you progress. The amount of water is a huge component, try really hard to increase what you are currently getting. Good Luck

love the above phrase :)

from one country to another - welcome, welcome, welcome :)

great to have another handsome man in the group :)

you listed 144 kg as your starting weight

kg = 2.2???

starting weight = 316 ( 301.84???)

you've lost 3.5 kg (7.48 lbs lost)

hope i dd this right???

don't worry about what "the other guy" has lost

we lose at our own pace, and we should NEVER compare our weight loss to someone elses

popular phrase on this board

"the one thing we have in common, is that we're all different ;)"

you are following doctors orders - keep it up :)

you wrote this about a week ago

how are you doing now????

hope things are continueing to go well :)

surgery coming up soon :)

speedy recovery :)

good luck

kathy

Firefly, being in Australia you probably do not have the options of products that we have, but you will manage. I am happy to hear that you do not have significant health problems yet and I hope this surgery keeps you from getting any. Wish the sleeve had been around 20 years ago! As Kathy said, we are all different, and we have to find what works for us. You will find many people are on different plans, lose differently, but this forum is a Godsend and will give you help, guidance and support as you go through this! Best of luck!

@@Firefly2000 Hello and welcome! My concern with Slim Fast brand is that it is pretty high in sugar and the Protein IMO is not great in comparison to some other brands you can use instead. That very well could be the reason you've not lost to your maximum potential.

Good luck!

Hi Everyone thanks for your words of encouragement. Its actually Optislim I am using, not SlimFast, I got them mixed up.

Weight loss has picked up. I am one week out from surgery and have lost about 17lb. However I am constantly starving and wanting to go grab a burger or something which I will not be able to eat after the surgery (will only ever be able to eat part of a burger).

What is the impact if I snap one week out? Can you still recover on liquids or does it put your liver back to square one?

Thanks,
Firefly

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
