I was sleeved on 4.16.14, since than I have lost a total of 55lbs. Although I am very excited I'm starting to question my sleeve decision. I know I'm suppose to slowly introduce foods back, such as puree, and other soft foods, but it's so frustrating to me. I'm on vacation in Las Vegas and only one of my friends know about my surgery. She completely understand everything I'm going thru, but the others don't. It's so hard when we go out to eat asking for ala cart or kids meals is embarsssing. Yesterday the waitress told me I couldn't get a kids meal due to my age, instead of explaining to her my situation I waisted a whole entire meal l didn't eat. My friends think I'm starting myself and don't want to eat. This crap is so... hard man. Right now I'm trying to eat a salad but can't eat the who thing. It's a real challenge. I don't want to ruin this trip for everyone but I see my friends getting catty with me already smh.

I can understand how that would be rough. Maybe just tell them your stomach hasn't been feeling great lately so you don't want to eat much? I usually just order off the appetizer menu when I go out.

WTH does your eating habits have to do with your friends having a good time in Vegas?!? Seriously, this is their problem, not yours. Order Soups or appropriate appetizer when you go out you save yourself the cost of a full meal you aren't going you eat. I'm 5 months out and that's still what I do. Or I don't order anything and just nibble off everyone else's plates...all my friends know about my surgery and support me all they can. In fact, they are thrilled now that I'm their permanent DD.

I agree with Kindle 100%! Enjoy the scenery and the company! Don't make food the center of everything and definitely don't regret your decision to get healthy!

And tell them not to worry about what you're eating! Lol good luck!

Agree with all the above. And I'll add that if you don't feel you have a choice but to order a full meal - just let go of the cost issue. If you hadn't had the sleeve surgery you'd eat the whole thing and spend the same, but also get the extra calories. So why is it the end of the world if you pay for that meal now and don't eat it all?

Just move the food around your plate a bit and say that you're not that hungry if anyone asks.

Jersey, you gotta be up front with your friends! There is nothing wrong with your procedure and to know is to better understand! I had to tell my friend yesterday at a cook out, I'm not pouring you a alcoholic beverage and you should not ask me to do that knowing I can't drink! You know I would want one! She understood!

I really am keeping my surgery a secret. I don't want everyone in my business. I don't like answering to people or hearing their un wanted opinions. I refuse to tell anyone else about it. But I will just try to stick to wat I know and let them know I "don't feel well" so they won't ask questions.

I order chicken wings off the appetizer menu or a cup of chili, some order shrimp cocktail. A salad will take up too much space in your tummy without providing enough Protein.

I didn't tell anyone except family but everyone knows I am dieting and watching carbs so to this point no one has questioned my menu choices. I also eat slowly so I keep the pace with the others a the table.

I spent some time considering how to address questions about my weight loss. In the end in decided I honestly don't care if someone knows I had the surgery. However, what I did care about is having to explain the entire process 200 times over.

That being said I don't really know what the best explanation might be. I think it depends alot on what people already know about you. Thier is definitely a stigmatism about people who undergo surgery (no matter what kind). People who I feel deserve to be part of my life and I know genuinely care about me, I would tell. Casual acquaintances get to hear a story based mostly in truth... Either I am on an all Protein or liquid based diet.

People seem to relate to what they themselves have experienced. All people have struggled with weight issues. So relating to them on a level they can comprehend seems to get me out of conversations faster.

I can be proud of my accomplishments with family and friends who actually care.

go ahead and tell them. then you dont have to waste anymore food. (or just order an appetizer next time) maybe you are way over thinking this.

Downplay it. If you end up somewhere that is not good for you skip it. You are in Vegas there is food everywhere. When I travel, I go to the grocery store and if you are in a hotel, clean out the mini fridge or ask the FD to do it and go get a couple yogurts, some cheese sticks, a box of crackers and some hummus. Put it all in your little area and then when you get hungry or if you can tell you are not going to get to eat, have a little snack. Also, bar apps are great, offer to share with one of the other girls. I do well with potstickers, sliders minus bread, quesadillas and shrimp cocktails. If they wanna hit the buffet for $50, say I am not a buffet person I will meet you after. Text me when you are done or meet them right after somewhere nearby. You do not have to be an eater to have a good time anymore. There are other things that are fun to do-esp in Vegas-the pool, blackjack, heck hit the gym while they eat then get ready.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
