I wanted to start this thread as I think those of us with 200 plus pounds to lose have unique challenges. For one, it is going to take us a couple years to get to goal. Many of you on here have been an inspiration to me so I wanted to start a thread. In September 2013, I finally made the decision to have the surgery! I had the RNY in February 2014 and I’m on the road to successful long term weight loss! Looking back, I have been on a weight roller coaster my entire life. It started when my mom took me to Weight Watchers in 1970 when I was just 10 years old and weighed 125. I first hit 300 lbs. in 1990 and then lost 80 lbs. because I was horrified at hitting 300! Over the next ten years, I lost and gained and gained it all back and then some to top the scale at 350 in 2004! Again I dieted and lost about 75 lbs. and kept the weight off for over six years. Then over the last four years, I have gained, gained and gained to reach 375 which was my highest weight ever. Does this sound familiar?

I tried every diet. I was most successful on Weight Watchers and medically supervised Protein diets. I tried Jenny Craig and even went through a weight loss hypnosis program where I received a “mental” lap band. This didn’t work too well for me. Does this sound familiar too? It was reaching my highest weight and the difficulty to move around that do basic household chores that I decided WLS was the only road that could rescue me.

I can’t believe I have already lost 60 lbs. since January 1st. This is one of the first times in my life I’ve been able to lose so quickly. I can’t believe how the weight has just dropped off and I’m not starving to death on 750 calories a day.

Please share ideas to success and challenges we can expect over the next few years working toward our goal weights. I’ve chosen 175 as a goal that will be exactly a 200 lbs. loss for me. What is your story?

Hello Carol P!

Thank you for starting this post. I dont have 200 lbs to lose, but I would like to about 165.

I have always been heavy, plus sized, pleasantly plump and every other adjective. I have alway been active. Swim team, marching band, athletic trainer. My weight has been a constant battle. I lost 50 pounds years ago on Atkins and kept it off for 10 years. It started to creep back up on me. In an effort to keep it off I have tried, injections, pills, every diet I came across. Nothing worked.

My weight ballooned up to 305. In January, my company merged with another and finally, I did not have an exclusion for bariatric surgery. I decided to try once again. Amazingly I was approved!

My surgery was April 15 and since April 2, I have lost 35 lbs.

I am so excited for the future

I too have a long road ahead of me. At my current weight of 330lbs, I am hoping to be back to 160lbs. It has been 17 yrs since I've seen that number on my scale.

I have always struggled with weight gain, after having my son 14 yrs ago I have tried diet after diet. I run daily 3-5 miles, working with a body coach, count every calorie I take in....and to my surprise, gain weight.

I have been tossing WLS back and forth for a few months now and I have finally made an appt with my surgeon, meeting him on May 27 with my 1st WL seminar that same night. I don't have many requirements with my insurance company before I can submit for approval. So I'm hoping for a smooth road and hopefully, fingers crossed, I can have my surgery scheduled sometime in August!

I am ready to conquer the road ahead, and take back control of my body. It's a great feeling to know I will be able to run in marathons with my son in the near future!!

I weighed at one time 350 back in 2006.

Over the seven years prior to my first meeting with the surgeon I lost 68 lbs on my own no special way.

I had been heavy all my life.

I once lost 150 but gained it all back and then some.

The best gift I gave myself was gastric bypass surgery.

I haven't been weighed since the end of March so I don't know if I'm at goal or not. You see I don't own a scale and don't plan on ever buying one.

I'm a work in progress.

Since surgery I no longer take meds for high blood pressure, diabetes, or cholesterol.

I am also off of other meds or have cut down a lot.

I've gone down from a 34/36 clothes to a 12/14 in size in pants and a large/extra large in tops. I'm proud of that.

I work out 4x a week on the stationary bicycle and do 9+ miles in 40 minutes.

I wish you all continued success.

Congratulations on your surgery. I am 1 year post-op RNY. The weight dropped off dramatically after surgery but after a while the weight loss slowed down. Expect this and don't be disappointed, just stay with the regiment. I hit a plateau around half way through my total weight loss. It's common to experience this.

I never set a goal. I figured my body would let me know when I reached my bottom and that it did. I have been pleased with the results.

Hello MissTrish14, MthrEffinPrncss1126, Chelly, James Marusek,

Thank you all for your comments. I know it will be a life long journey and it is great to hear from all of you about your unique challenges.

Miss Trish - Sounds like you are doing fantastic with your surgery! I'm so glad for you that you were approved and the weight seems to be dropping right off of you. You are welcome for starting this post. I'm glad you wrote a reply.

Bobby Jo - You will be happy you had the surgery. I wish I would have done it back in 1990. I always thought I could do it alone and eat like I had the surgery but that never worked. I even just went to the WLS Seminar expecting to not get the surgery but just to check it out and I was almost the largest person in the room which was a shocker to me. That is what sold me to be honest.

Chelly, it sounds like you have had great success! Congratulations!I can't wait for the day I can fit into a 14! I'm already down from a 32 to a 28 size jeans I got into today!

Good for you, James! You have had fantastic results in a year and are an inspiration to all of us.

Hello! I'm a newbie here but I am part of the 200#'s to lose club also.

I've always struggled with my weight and had my first Weight Watchers experience when I was 11.

Ive dieted over and over again and always gained my weight back plus more.

My heaviest was 415. It was a horrible day when I saw that number on the scale at the doctors office. I had let myself go to the point of constant pain and 15 pills a day. Something had to change.

So far, after a lot of struggle, I am down to 360 and am finally starting my classes on July 3rd.

Thank you for starting this thread, I like knowing there are others out there that are in the same boat.

Hello!

I had 197 pounds to lose. I had surgery October 31st. I have lost 135 pounds now and am finally in onederland. I am feeling fabulous, even though I am not thin, I am the thinnest I have been in years. I still have about 60 pounds to lose to reach my goal, but I think I would be happy if this was it. I have come so far and am proof that it can be done!!

Wizzyglick - Enjoy the process. This is still the fastest I have ever lost weight. Just trust the process and enjoy it. It's the journey not the destination!

Hello All, Well I've been hoping for some NSV's but they seem to be slow in coming. The good news is that my 5X's are too big now and my size 30 slacks! It has taken four months to get down a size! What a victory!

Hi I had the sleeve done on 4/21/14 and have lost 36 pounds. I started at 349 so I have 180-200 pounds to lose as well. I'm glad I found this forum as well. I have a question I hope someone can help me with. My surgeon prescribed me a med to protect my gallbladder but I haven't been taking it cause of the effects it has on the liver. I talked to 2 other people that needs to lose as much weight as I do that used the same surgeon and neither of them were prescribed this med. Is there anyone on this forum that was prescribed a pill to takes two times a day to protect your gallbladder. I can't think of the name of the med right now.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
