Post-op 1 week today! Questions....

Recommended Posts

Hi, I had the sleeve procedure done 1 week ago today.

March 8, my highest weight : 375

April 9, 2014 started pre op 1200 calorie diet

April 21, 2014 started liquid diet

April 23, 2014 had surgery.

Since surgery, a week ago, I have lost 20 pounds. Overall since March 8th, I have lost 35 pounds.

Questions:

1. Is it normal to lose weight so rapidly like this? I'm on a full liquid diet for 2 weeks and then go to puree diet for 2 weeks. Then I can go to soft/solid foods.

2. I can drink a pretty normal amount. Will the major restrictions come once I am able to have actual food in my stomach instead of Water? Sometimes I feel like my stomach should of been cut down more than it is. I hear and see things about people not being able to drink and they have pains and complications, I'm over here like, I don't have a problem swallowing and it doesn't hurt when I drink my Protein Drink which is 8 oz. I do drink it over a 15-20 minute time span so I'm not sure if that has something to do with it.

3. Cravings for real solid foods are strong at times but I power through in fear of causing myself pain or not following my doctors orders.

4. Has anyone entered the pureed portion of the diet and still continue to drop weight rapidly?

Thank you for checking out my post and any input you may have to offer!

Brooke

I was the same way I lost a lot the first two weeks and yes I was able to drink freely and without any pain or to much restriction! I also thought that maybe my sleeve might be to big! but NO I feel the restiction now on soft foods after a couple of bites and yes my wieght stalled for a week and now it is coming off fast again :D I love the way I feel I have been so luck to not have complications!!

I also felt the need for solids when on liquids but now I have to stop and make my self eat. My energy level is great and I have droped almost 3 pant sizes!! Keep up the good work!!!! B)

Hi Brooke,

I am 9 days out from surgery, and I too have questions.

I haven't lost but 2 lbs since my surgery. Total weight loss of 17.5 lbs. total in 3 weeks (2 weeks pre-op). Kinda concerned that the weight doesn't seem to be coming off as fast as I thought it would. My BMI was at 30 when I had the surgery and my weight was 177. I am walking everyday. I am hoping when I get back to work next week that the weight will begin to fall off. I am only having very liquid foods and Protein drinks until next week. Then on to soft puréed foods. No complications as far as drinking anything either. But I am careful about how much over what time period. I too am afraid to not follow the drs. orders. I guess I am just looking for support and would appreciate all offered.

Christina

Hello Brookie,

Like you I lost weight quickly the first week. As I have been moving through the diet phases that loss has slowed to 3 lbs a week, 5 weeks out. I'll take that!! I've had no restriction to liquids since the start but when I got to soft food I found my skinny tummy is full after 1/2 a cup of food. I craved some foods early on however that has gone away since I have so many choices of what to eat. (always Protein first).

I expect my rate of weight loss to slow as I continue in this lifestyle. Getting exercise is now something important to me. Remember it's not all about the numbers.

Best of luck.

i had my surrey on 3/10. i lost 10 pounds really fast then was on a five week stall. i was so worried that something was wrong. Finally, I am losing again. I have lost a total of 20 pounds which I will gladly take. Praying I don't hit another stall anytime soon. I, too, can drink without a problem. I feel that's a blessing. good luck to all of you.

With a BMI of 30 your loss is going to be slow. Generally the bigger you are the faster the initial weight loss.

I would agree that the bigger you are or the higher you BMI is the quicker the weight comes off. At first anyway.

Thank you so much for all of your replies! I greatly appreciate it!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
