Now, this is a TOTAL guess, but I'll bet if you were a black female athlete who trained hours every day and fought stereotypes and perhaps adverse circumstances your whole life, and who ended up becoming an award-winning basketball player, you'd have a really, really different perspective on things.

It's funny when white males tell black girls to get over it. Try living their life for one day. You're an overpriveleged majority. You get over yourself.

Being offensive is Imus's schtick. He is a shock jock and for many years he and Howard Stern were carrying on a serious rivalry for both market share and the title of 'king of the shock jocks.' A shock jock is expected to be outrageous, gross, controversial, and offensive. His target audience is males from the age of 15 to 40, males with a frat boy sense of humour, a target group which is notoriously difficult to attract, by the way.

Don Imus certainly did blow it with the 'nappy head ho' wise crack but that is because he is a white guy who happened to diss a team of serious female athletes. Had he been a Black artist he might have been cut some slack. Who knows?

Of course Imus is not a racist. He is just a shock jock who pushed the rule-breaking, politically incorrect humour envelope way too far. (Howard Stern may be better protected; his long-term side-kick, Robin Quivers, is a woman of colour and he himself is Jewish.)

I would also suggest that the problem which Imus has run up against was in part created by the young Black urban music culture itself. We have, afterall, been listening to black men referring to their women as hos for a couple of decades now. It will become more difficult to remember to prize individuals who seem to hold themselves and those who belong to them in contempt. Perhaps this stupid white man fell into this trap.

I dont understand why more women are not out rage about his comment. I just wonder if it was a team of white blonds and he made a comment about the blond's (blond bimbo ho's) would that have gotten the same amount of attention? Just wondering.

I really need to leave this thread. So, black men or the only ones that either refer to women as hos? Aren't young white males are the main purchasers of hip hop music. And I guess it's okay for Tommy Lee, Kid Rock and them to objectify women. It's okay for Paris and Nicole to make sex tapes and call either other bitches and hos. No, no, YOU have got to be kidding me. Have you seen admission demographics for major universities, heard of affirmative action, read the newspaper, or stepped out of your shelter in the last, oh, 5 or 6 years compared to 15-20 years ago? Didn't think so.

The big difference, as I see it, is that rappers are not speaking TO a particular group of individuals; Imus was. I don't like it when hip-hop artists denigrate women in general. I wish women would band together and boycot that garbage. But I would like it even less if Snoop Dog put out a CD in which he called me, personally, a "ho".

Carlene: I agree w/you mostly on this one. When the rappers or any musical group use degrading lyrics they ARE singling out a specific group, be it women, gays, etc. When they sing about a 'ho', I would assume that they're singing about more offten then not, an african american female (obviously having no respect for their own female relatives). The almighty dollar would work as far as a boycott. I know it's easy to say, well then turn it off, but it's not that easy. You've got so many kids home alone after school, on breaks, etc. that they can't be monitered 24/7. Personally, I think BOTH Imus and rappers are wrong in that respect. I am changing careers. Until the spring classes start, I am working as a sub/teacher at my child’s school. The rap music is a big influence on the kids!!!!

You can hear our African-American children calling each other “nigger””Ho” ,

the Hispanic ones calling each other “beaners””F..Immigrant”

and the Anglo children calling each other “cracker”, ”bitches” etc…

It got so bad, that the counselors called for an assembly. It was hard for the children to understand why it was wrong to call each other names.

This and other comments were the ones that we heard that day. They don’t comprehend the real meaning of this words.The singers are not punished for using them, and this singers are “successful” and rich. So what is wrong with this???

Is this freedom of speech? Is this just an innocent, jokingly way to call each race a little name?

My children wouldn’t even think about doing that. They know exactly why this is wrong. Is it the children’s fault, or the parents fault for allowing this kind of music at home???

You misread my earlier comments. I did say that Imus blew it when he made it when he made that comment. I also say that he is not a racist and that that wisecrack, though offensive, came from a different place. He was trying, and failing badly, to be hip and humorous. As to individuals whom you mention above, the young white males who purchase rap music, those dudes are Imus's target audience. An examination of his idiotic remark displays that he was talking to dudes: he was commenting on the results of a b-ball game and he used the term ho.

As to how well I know Don Imus, well, I used to listen to Howard Stern's show for a couple of years and I read one of his books. Through studying Stern I gathered that Imus, his only rival, dealt in the same kind of tasteless yet sometimes wildly funny schtick. You see, I do have a frat boy's sense of humour and happen to detest soft rock, middle of the road music.

There is a big difference between rappers who refer to ALL women (or even all black women) as whores and Don Imus, who insulted a much, much smaller, much more specific group of people - the women's basketball team of Reutger's University. These are women with names and faces. It would be about the same thing as him calling Condoleeza Rice a "nappy-headed ho". How well do you think that would have gone over?

I would not take kindly to being called a "bitch" or a "whore" by anyone. I would not be amused, no matter who made the remark. Call me old fashioned, but if a talk show host went on the air and called me, personally, a whore, I'd want his ass fired, too. But that's just me.

I do believe that we have to look at context and provenance when we examine things which people say. I have heard comedians call each other's mother a ho. On South Park, a show which never fails to push the envelope, Cartman's mother is routinely called a crack whore, the Black kid is called Token, and all groups get dissed.

When an offensive word is said out of hatred and not out of ignorance or in order to make - rightly or wrongly - a comedic point we know it and it is for these individuals that we should save our righteous anger. Those who speak out of ignorance or go too far when trying to create comedy should also be educated by the public of course but we should not lose sight of the fact that these people are not true hate-mongerers. They are simply idiots.
