Day 7 post op and still not able to drink enough

Is this normal? I know they said try and meet goals but not to expect to right away. It doesn't hurt to swallow anymore but I'm so scared to drink too much I'm still sipping really slow.

I'm getting about 30oz of Water and three 4oz Protein drinks that are 12g each.

I was thinking about adding a full scoop instead of half scoop to the 4oz of water for shakes so I could get more protein in less liquid but I didn't know if that would cause any problems.

Any tips?

LidiBell, I was sleeved on 4/9/14 with hernia repair and lots of adhesions that dr had to deal with. Have you called dr about the problems you are having? If you are able to walk that will help with a lot of the pains.

I have walked daily somsgal. The only time I am in pain is when I am sitting up straight. I have not called the doctor yet, I wasn't sure if this was normal. Have you experienced anything like this? Discomfort in the upper abdomen or sorta like the sternum area?

  • Yes, I had a hernia repaired. I called my doctor today. They seem to think it is simply from the sleeve and all of the swelling in my abdomen. I have ate and drank more today that I have been able to thus far.

I am seven days post op today and I too am having a difficult time getting the fluids in. The interesting thing is my doctor told me that any Fluid including Protein drinks are considered fluid. I drink about 60 oz a day; however the protein is the hardest for me. Today I was able to start eating pureed foods so that has helped. Actually I started feeling human today. Anyone else start feeling better once they could go on the pureed diet? While I am not hungry I just know I have to eat a few times a day in order to ensure I am getting enough in me.

Remember those of you who feel you made a mistake it is too early to say that. We are all so early out that we cannot make that assumption yet.

We can do this!

Special k protein mix for water. 5 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. 2 flavors, strawberry kiwi and pink lemonade. I empty a packet into a bottle of water using 4 packets a day. That gives me my water and 20 grams of protein.

I tried ice water today and that has really helped!

I am only 2 days post op. I am only able to drink about 20 oz of water. I add unflavored protein to my soup, pudding, yogurt...anything I can. That way I can possibly get 35-40 grams of protein. My doctor didn't tell me what I had to have, they just said this is a goal to shoot for. How do you get more fluids down sipping. I sip all day and only get the 20 oz. Can you drink a little more at a time in a month or two?

I was told to drink 2 oz every 15 mins. It's hard but can be done. I start before my first meal and continue the routine 45 mins after my last bite for each meal.

Today is 9 days out for me and this is the first day I have been able to drink much of anything. I have been extremely thirsty today. I actually think I was on my way to becoming dehydrated. Every day is a new day though. Thank god! Michael Reed what are you pureeing? Can you give me some examples. I think I need something other than soup broths. I need something of substance!

Hi LidiBell,

I have been doing cream of crab soup with mash potatoes, cream of chicken with real chicken pureed along with cream of chedder brocolli Soup. I have been getting creative with the cream Soups and adding real chicken or beef. You can dress this stuff up! What have you been doing?

I am 4 days out of surgery and am having a hard time consuming my liquids. I feel like whatever I drink it gets stuck in my chest. Right above my diaphragm. It is uncomfortable feeling and I feel like my stomach spasms whenever I take to big of drinks. I think today I have only been able to intake about 8-10 oz of water. I have had broth and and sugar free instant breakfast with almond milk but was only able to finish about 1/4 of the cup

That was about how it was for me.

Super fab when did that feeling go away?

Super fab when did that feeling go away?

Slowly. I know you hear this all the time but it really does get better over time. I remember being so discouraged and even crying Bc I couldn't get past that feeling. Then I got to where my urine was pretty dark so I knew I was getting dehydrated. I got Vitamin Water zero and a 1 ounce little plastic cup. I'd fill it up and my friend and I would play "the drinking game" and I'd drink an ounce every 5 minutes. We'd do that a few times a day with different fluids. (Plain water made me sick)

At about 5 weeks out I was able to drink almost normally, taking about 3 swallows at a time per drink out of a regular cup. Now I swallow without even thinking about it. Only thing is I have to make myself remember to have something to drink with me Bc I'm never really thirsty.

Hang in there. It'll get a little better each day.
