Help! TOM munchies?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm 4 months out today and I am down 48 pounds from surgery. It's been a little slow but I'm happy with my weight loss so far. So here's my issue. Aunt flow is visiting and I have the munchies like no other. I can't seem to get satisfied and I am really craving sugar and salt and just plain old volume. Is this normal? Anyone have any tips? Otherwise, I'm just going to call this a free day and give in to my cravings and start fresh tomorrow. BTW, I'm hormonal, so be nice!

I think you shouldn't beat yourself up too much about one rough day! Sometimes I need an extra laughing cow or a little piece of good quality chocolate, too! Just don't eat to quickly or you'll be in a world of pain! I went overboard on Belgian beef stew last month and the results were wicked ugly! :-) sometimes we just need a little treat!

I did read a great article on this site today about emotioral eating. I don't know if what you're feeling is physical or emotional, but we all eat emotionally from time to time. The article is under the WLS magazine articles down to the right. I appreciated it because I loveaffirmations, but never thought to use them st appropriate times.

Best wishes to you!

Hey there! I'm in the exact same situation right now with Aunt Flow and I'm about 3.5 months post op. Don't give in!! If you need to have a bite of something, fine, but you don't want to give in to a complete "free day". Too soon for that in my opinion! Free days turn into free weeks, etc... Just curious, how tall are you, what what your starting weight and what's your goal?

I'm 5'2. My preop weight was 262. Surgery day, I was 253. Today I was 205.8. I hope to get to 135, so still a ways to go. BTW, I've eaten more than usual today, but I haven't gone crazy.

I was there last week and it was horrible!! I ended up having one very bad day, but I'm back on the wagon now and not having an issue (especially since that wicked witch Aunt Flow has left!!!!!!) I usually allow myself a "cheat" meal anyway once a week, as does my boyfriend who has had extrememly successful weightloss.

Yes, keep it under control, No don't make yourself feel bad. No one is perfect and to expect perfection will just lead us all down that path of failure all over again.

Congrats on your weightloss!!!!

I am also four months out and when Aunt Flow visits I get the munchies like CRAZY! Auntie Flow visits me two times a month its hell. Last night I gave into the munchies and had cinnamon roasted almonds as my snack of choice at 9pm which was bad. I have been trying so bad not to eat after 7pm and its hard. So today I am back on the wagon and going to be a little more stricter with these munchies of hell.

What about a Protein bar? Make sure it has good Protein and lower sugars and fats and you're good to go!

Wow, our surgeries were on the same date (Nov 25 2013!) and we're on the same...schedule! I go through this every month, but to be honest, I don't really give it too much thought unless I find myself eating too frequently. Last night I had one serving of chocolate filled wafer rolls and that satisfied me. Last month I ate a small bag of chips and a couple of Cookies the week before my period. I usually get the munchies the week before and just tell myself its normal and let it go. It hasn't seemed to have a negative impact on my losses at all; still going down a steady 3 pounds per week.

I do have some guidelines for myself during these times, though. I allow myself any kind of snack I want as long as the meals I have that day are nutrient and Protein dense. This is something that we will have to deal with until menopause so no need to torture ourselves over it. As long as you keep your calories in check, it would be really difficult to gain actual fat during a few days of increased eating.

I do know a couple of women who asked their surgeon for an appetite suppressant to take a few days a month. One of them is on Phentermine (one pill, three days per month max) and she says it helps keep her on track.

It will pass, and next week you'll be back in your groove! :)

I'm right there with you! Early this week was hell. I had crazy munchies. I ended up having from garlic butter french fries (after my grilled mahi). The salt and fat pretty much satisfied me.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
