Post-op hospital stay

Recommended Posts

I am getting sleeved on March 13th. I'm reading so many stories on this surgery but I haven't heard much about the hospital stay. I was told between two and three nights, which doesn't matter how long I need to stay but haven't heard much about the over all stay. Any one have any pointers or tips on how to survive the hospital stay? Expectations for pain? It would a greatly appreciated!

I wasn't in that much pain and only had one incidence of nausea. The most important thing is to get up and walk walk walk! It will help you get rid of the gas they pump into you and help clear out the anesthesia. Also when they let you start drinking Water, just take little sips. I had a tracking form that I used to track how many onces in each hour.

Otherwise it was uneventful. You don't get much sleep because the nurses come in every 3 - 4 hours to take your vital signs.

I just got out last Wednesday....... It really wasn't that bad... Definitely walk....and also Bring Chapstick. The time goes quick. And you won't be hungry. It was a relief to get in and get this done after all the preop build up...

I went in Tuesday, Feb 25th, and went home Wednesday, Feb 26th. Of course, my surgery was the first up on Tuesday, and it seemed to be over before I realized it. Seems that they had me up walking before the dizzyness of the anesthesia totally wore off, which was a little weird, but ok. I actually walked quite a bit on my own because I didn't want to stay another day.

My doc put a nausea patch on me before the surgery, then afterwards put anti nausea and pain medicine in my IV every 6 hours, so I had no nausea and very little pain overall. I was surprised that they put me on full liquids the second day, but I wasn't hungry, so it didn't matter. Took chapstick, but didn't really need it. Took a small pillow which did help during walks and when I stood up from the bed. Took a bag with a few things like Shampoo, hairspray, blowdryer and curling Iron, but didn't need any of that, just a toothbrush and toothpaste. Took slippers, but didn't use them...used the socks they put on me. Didn't read my kindle, didn't get on the internet, barely watched tv...just kind of vegged out and catnapped most of the time. They put these wraps on my legs that inflated and deflated every half a minute or so to help prevent blood clots. Felt like my legs were getting massaged....loved that.

Over all...not a bad experience. Loved the hospital, West Georgia Health. My doc, and all the staff were the best I could have hoped for.

I'm the 13th as well, in Nashville. My doc says one night. I'm scheduled for 1:30 so I'm thinking I'll go home Friday afternoon??? Just freaking out a little about complications after reading some threads. Trying to keep the anxiety at bay!

I was a two nighter. My insurance originally approved one night, but I had some little problems with my oxygen level so they kept me another day. I was so lucky that they put me on some sort of pain pump. I got to hit the button every ten minutes. So, I was never in pain for very long. I walked my first day but not a whole lot, the second day they had someone from PT come and walk with me. Then I just walked by myself and did some laps while I was there. I was really nauseaus for the first day and pretty dizzy. That wore off by the second day. I was lucky and they gave me a sleeping mask and earplugs when I was there at the hospital, but I would 100% advise you bringing those items. I didn't sleep a whole lot, but without those two items I wouldn't have slept it all. Good Luck!!

I stayed 2 nights. I had very little pain, but was nauseous for several hours right after surgery (prob from anesthesia). I took pain meds regularly and never had any problems. I also walked, walked, walked. I was never hungry but was very thirsty. It was a little frustrating because I was so thirsty but couldn't take more than a small sip. I agree take Chapstick, I also took some very loose fitting clothes from home for the second day. The hospital stay itself was great, I had wonderful nurses and aids. The only issue I have with the hospital is that they DO NOT let you rest. Someone is always coming in to do something. I was exhausted when I left the hospital.

I was sleeved two weeks ago today. I was supposed to stay in the hospital for two days, but was release a day early.

The hospital is cold so make sure you takes some warm socks. The pain varies from person to person, but my pain was minimal. I refused pain meds and

took Tylenol a couple of times. The nausea was pretty bad for about 2 days, but it eventually passed.

Good luck with your surgery

Thank you for the tips. I wish you the best of luck and success with your surgery. I get sleeved next Thursday the 13th, so it definitely helps to hear about people experience with it and hospital stay. Thank you again :)

I got sleeved 10 days ago. You'll need socks slippers and a robe. You'll be walking. If you are close I would bring a pillow. I went to MX so wasn't going to drag my pillow all the way over there, but sure missed it.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
