Acid reflux after hernia repair?

Recommended Posts

So, last night I started to feel a bit sick. I was getting a bad stomach ache, it's like a dull ache in the center of my stomach that sometimes radiates to my back. I was also feeling a little nauseous. I have had this stuff for over 20 years due to GERD. Every so often it flares up badly, to where I'm sick in my stomach and I sometimes barf. Anyway, I was able to go to sleep, it didn't get any worse like it usually does. I woke up today with the same sour stomach, and still a little nauseous. In the past this was not unusual, because a flare up could last a 7-10 days. It felt better after I ate something. I'm about to take some Gaviscon for it. That's what worked for me in the past. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm eating full foods now, but still making sure they are soft enough for me.

I was banded on Tuesday of this week and I had a hernia repair as well. I've struggled off and on with GERD my entire life and I actually did notice that it's a little worse post-op! I get that dull ache you described as well as a churning feeling. It goes back and forth. I've been taking liquid Rolaids for it right now. I have an appointment with my surgeon on Monday and I'm going to ask him if he thinks I need a long term treatment like prilosec or nexium.

I would say call your surgeon and maybe get checked. We also can't just assume that everything is band related.

I have an appointment with my surgeon on Monday and I'm going to ask him if he thinks I need a long term treatment like prilosec or nexium.

After I was banded, especially the first couple days, I had that dull ache, too. I really felt like it was my GERD, but it was just gas. I had terrible gas pains for several days.

I'm sorry you're not feeling well, too, but it's so good to hear from someone that knows what I'm talking about! Most people understand the heartburn feeling caused by GERD, but the sour stomach feeling is hard to describe. I used to have both, but since my surgery I haven't had any heartburn. Heartburn was a daily pain for me. The sour stomach feeling sort of feels like an ulcer, or that's what I've been told. I've done various barium tests over the years to rule out any ulcers or H-pylori (a stomach bacteria).

I've been Prilosec a few times. My doctor used to prescribe it for a couple months to heal what was wrong, and then I'd go off it. You can get prescription strength Prilosec over the counter now in 14 day sizes. I used to buy the generic one from Target.

I hope you feel better soon! I have found that liquid Gaviscon is the best when I have a sour, achy stomach. :)

I'm feeling a bit better today. If it's still bugging me tomorrow I'll call them.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
