Surgery 2/25/2018 ! 14-day pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

On day four of 14 day pre-op liquid diet....stomach is really upside down, rumbling about everything! Not feeling weak yet. Eating high Protein liquids, mostly. I think this is gonna get old fast. I bought sugar free Jello and sf pudding, which will switch it up a bit.....tomato Soup is my favorite so far....really want to add something solid to the soup....

At least you can have Tomato Soup. All I can have is Protein drinks, Clear Liquids, Jello, and sugar free popsicles.

It will be over before you know it.

SweetSophia, why can't you do Tomato Soup? I know your having trouble with the shakes, what brands have you tried? I really like EAS chocolate, the low carb one.

I don't know why I can't have Tomato Soup. The dietitian gave me a list of approved food and drinks and it just said clear broth.< /p>

And I tried Muscle Milk and I can tolerate that. And I'm gonna look for EAS.

I can't have Tomato Soup because I can't find one that's low enough in sugar. Which sucks cause I could kill for some right now. Haha.

Also, I really like GNC's extreme 60 whey Protein. I've only had the chocolate, but it was really good.

Same here SweetSophia! And I absolutely can't STAND broth! Just the smell of it makes me gag. So I'm stuck with Protein shakes (3 a day), Jello and popsicles. Blecchhh!!!

I just finished day 3 on Bariatric Advantage shakes and I am over them. My tongue feels really gross even after brushing my teeth but I am assume that is the toxins leaving my tongue or my taste buds begging for something savory. My surgery is on the 28th.

It doesn't matter how much I brush my tongue, it still feels gross. Hah

Good to know because that was one of the options from my nut. I hear that the Premier Protein shakes are good so I may try those.

Hello Dignity, hang in there girl! You and I are on the exact same schedule, my surgery is also on 2/25 @ 11am (to be exact! lol) I'm 8 days in now on the pre-op diet. The first 3-4 days I thought I was going to eat my arm off. Now, I'm not even hungry really, just weak and a constant headache, but I'm chugging along. I had my pre-admissions testing yesterday, so now I'm just counting down the days, prepping my home for my recovery, and packing my bag. I have to do 3 shakes plus one meal a day. The meal is 4 oz Protein, 1 cup veggies, 1/2 cup whole grain (rice or pasta). During the day I drink, drink, drink as much as I can and trying different Protein drinks to see what I like (Isopure tastes like butt crack - in my opinion). My beverages include Water, lots of Crystal Light, herbal tea, and chicken broth. With the chicken broth I add some Mrs. Dash, black pepper, garlic and a teaspoon of powered skim milk and voila! you have cream of chicken Soup (well...sort of:). Do what you need to do (within your limits) to get the fluids in and stick to your diet. With regards to Protein, I did something different this morning. I have some frozen fruit in the freezer for smoothies, so I took 1/2 of a small frozen banana and put it in my blender with 1 cup of Water, 1 scoop of vanilla Protein powder, 2 teaspoons of powdered skim milk, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a splash of vanilla and 2 packets of splenda and it was ABSOLUTELY HEAVENLY! I thought I was drinking a banana milk shake. I know, I know banana is not on the pre-op diet, but I don't think a little old banana is going to kill it either. Like I said, I'm doing what I need to do to keep from eating a pizza or something else crazy. Best wishes on your surgery next week. Yay for us!!!!:)

Premier Protein shakes have been our favorite. Also I like the convenience of grab one and go off for the day. We went through two bags of Bariatric Advantage Protein Powder, and thank God my husband tolerates them because I cannot. I plan to continue to use the EAS Protein powder (from Walmart) once the weather warms because when blended with ice it is very good.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
