Should parents be able to smack children in discipline

Should the government have the power to legislate 'smacking' children as illegal.

Hi, I think that it is never ok to hit a child. The act of striking a child is an act of violence. We teach children that it is not alright to be rough with or hit another child, then we smack them?

I think Parents need to develop skills that allow them to negotiate difficult behaviour management issues with their children without resorting to physical means of punishment. Smacking is never ok.

I only skimmed most of the posts... but I got a few spankings as a kid. Not hard, and not mean, but they got they sent the message for sure.

I think it's a personal choice, but I'm all for spanking kids if need be. Especially after my drive-thru experience the other day.

So I was in the Wendy's drive-thru, and two cars up there was this GIANT SUV and there was a little boy in the back seat, probably about 8-9 years old. They were a car away from the order menu/speaker "thingy" and this kid rolls his window down, climbs OUT of the SUV through the window, runs around the outside of the car for a few minutes, and as mom pulls up to order he jumps up, puts his feet on the window ledge, and climbs on TOP of the SUV while mom is pulling up about 15 feet!!! So, if that wasn't bad enough, mom starts ordering, and the kid jumps down the 8 or so feet from the roof of the car, and starts screaaaaaming into the speaker while mom is trying to order. Her response? "Alex honey, mommy is ordering." (oh. my. god.) The kid's response? "Shut up I'm talking to the lady and I'm getting my TOY (i assume he means in the kids' meal)!"

First off, i wanted to SMACK this child... second, mom made no move to even tell her kid to get in the car, let alone enforce any rules. After screaming at the poor woman taking orders, little boy climbed back in the SUV via the open window again, and proceeded to hit his mother on the back of the head with some kind of inflatable toy until pulling up to the window to get food, where they held up the line for another 4 minutes while the kid threw a fit about getting the wrong toy, and then got a new one... sheesh. beat your kid already...

Disciplining your kid is a kind and loving thing to do. The kid described in the above post is going to have a tough time in the adult world. He doesn't realise that nobody but his mother is going to put up with him and cover for his bad behaviour. This is a kid that only a mother could love, and she made him that way.:phanvan

Spanking wasn't a punishment for really minor things in my house. There were a handful of things we'd get spanked for, and we pretty much figured out what they were and quit doing those things. Sure, my mom probably spanked us a bit harder than she had to to get her point across, but we're all fine, lol. And whenever we got grounded if we weren't at school or doing homework, we were doing chores.

I do agree that different punishments work for different kids. My future sister in law worked in daycare for a good while, and all they could do was say "that's not okay" and put a kid in time out. They couldn't say "what you did was bad", or anything with the word "bad" in it. I just don't see this doing much for alot of kids. Especially the ones that run their houses (vs the parents).

I think we (as a society) are teaching our children to be wusses, and that for some reason they should get their way in life. I know middle aged people who don't understand why things don't go their way, or why you would DARE say no to them if they asked you for something. It's very hard to work with.

Anyway, I do believe that spanking a kid is different than slapping them or hitting them. I believe that the reason you are spanking them needs to be explained before and after it happens, and I believe there is a point where it will quit working (the age of reason someone called it), and of course there are some kids it wont really effect. I don't believe the gov't should get envolved.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
