Dr. Oz...oh puleeze

Recommended Posts

I just watched an episode of Dr. Oz - the first time in many months. He had on a woman who weighed 56 pounds. It was horrifying to see her and her condition.

Then I got to thinking about all the other Dr. Oz episodes I've watched and realized they were all about losing weight in some way, shape or form.

And I agree, he promotes really expensive products that aren't available anyone living outside NYC or L.A.!

I also saw the episode with the 56 Lbs lady. So sad for her.

I don't really watch his show unless it has things like the 56 Lb lady. Other than that he is just promoting all kinds of supplements that no one really needs or scaring us into thinking that drinking apple juice and milk will kill us. He's all about shock value IMPO.

I watched that episode also with he 56 pound woman. I hope she got the treatment she needs. I really don't like doctor oz for a lot of the reasons already mentioned. I feel like he's very shaming in a way 'no you're doing it totally wrong do it like this' I don't know, there are a lot of things I don't like about the guy.

As for the foods he recommends- not really sure which ones he's mentioned. I'm lucky enough to have a fresh produce market close to me so I'm able to get a lot of fresh veggies and fruits etc but I know not everyone has that luxury, and again that's why I feel like he 'shames' people. For example I caught a segment where he was talking about types of lettuce. Iceberg being the lest good for you health wise, to dark greens being best. If someone said they are lettuce instead of saying 'good job on eating a salad instead if eating junk' it's more like 'no that isn't the best for you. Eat romaine.' I don't know I feel he's kind of condescending but that's just me.

Sorry that was way more of a rant then I intended lol

Why bother watching... Every week it's something else you need to eat its all about what he can endorse that week!!! I don't believe any of the hoopla!!!!

He is a quack. The only reason I watch occasionally is because a good friend of mine is featured on their as a workout instructor (Stepp Stewart)

He is a cardiologist, who was promoted into fame by Oprah. He preaches on ALL health issues, as if he was an expert in all areas of medicine. Clearly, no specialist is an expert in ear, nose & throat issues, unless they're an ENT. Just as an emergency medical doctor isn't a cardiologist. Dr. Oz promotes whatever sells....period. In the beginning I watched his show. Then we ended up with the (what I refer to) as the Dr. Oz cabinet in our kitchen; loaded with tons of different supplements, herbs, etc. The very scary part of what he does, is promote so many different things that may not work well together. One day it's this, the next day it's THAT......on and on and on! There is no discussion of how these supplements interact with other supplements, and/or medication someone might be taking. He's talking to the general public, many who run right out and buy everything with the hope of losing weight. I stopped watching his show a long time ago. He's nothing more than a sensationalist. And a dangerous one at that.

I laughed when I read your post - could have been written by me!!!!! I, too, have a cabinet full of supplements that I purchased after I started watching his show. I bought two bottles of raspberry ketones and were never opened. Selenium tablets. Mineral supplements because Vitamins weren't enough. I could go on, but you get the point.

I stopped watching after I looked at the sticky notes on my desk listing my next purchases I wanted to make! LOL.

Hahaha.....I know, right?! One of the things he was hot on, was konjac root. That, and another one he spoke of that same day. My husband went out and got both bottles. We went on a trip to northern California, and took a walk through Muir Woods. I had taken the konjac root, and halfway through the woods I got cramps; needed a bathroom DESPERATELY. The problem was, NO bathrooms throughout that whole expedition. We turned around and headed back, and I had to stop several times, bent over to control the explosion (sorry for the graphics) that was needing to happen. We made it back, but I will never ever forget that experience. Then, there was the garcinia cambogia and green coffee bean extract. Both completely wigged me out. Yep.....I'm so done with his BS. I'm surprised that he still has an audience.

are you saying dr oz is the new jerry springer?? If so, count me in! In all seriousness, dr oz does have some good things to say about nutrition and is practical for many people based on some of the shows I have seen in the past. Maybe he has changed more recently...

Every time I go into a Vitamin store (which is not often) someone comes in asking for a particular product they saw on Dr Oz.

It happens all the time. Every time I went into a store looking for his herb du jour, they were out of it because of everyone's mad dash to get it.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
