sleeve pain after drinking liquids 4 days post-op

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm hoping that this pain will subside once I begin healing better. I'm experiencing pain in my sleeve as water/protein shake sips come into contact with the new tiny tummy. It frightens me, but I passed the bariatric swallow test the day after surgery, so I feel weird contacting my doctor. I'm still sore and freshly sleeved/swollen. Maybe I'll give it a few more days. I was surprised this morning to be 5 lbs down from my pre-surgery weight. But it's a serious challenge to get Water and/or Protein Shakes down without pain. Any helpful advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

They loaded you up on fluids and stuff in the hospital, so a few days of lax intake isn't gonna harm you. When you drink, you take in air with the fluids and the air (gas) is what is probably causing you the pain. You'll get better at it and the swelling will subside and things will get easier. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Watching the weight drop is such a pleasure. ^_^

Are you drinking cold liquids? I was drinking room temperature stuff in the hospital, and continued that at home at first.

Where is the pain? Esophagus? That could come from taking too big a sip (happens to me a lot). They had me pouring liquid into an ounce cup and sipping a third of that cup every 5 minutes, so I was having about 4 ounces an hour. If I went too fast (especially in the first 3-4 weeks, it's a little better now), it hurt.

Don't be afraid to call your doctor with questions! I'm sure they'd rather talk to you about it now so they can decide if they need to see you. They want this to work for you. :)

Hello, Finallythin. I just recently had my sleeve as well. I'm Day 6 post op. I understand your pain, quite literally. Nausea is also still a big problem for me along with gas. Gas X is very helpful. My doc also recommended Peppermint tea since peppermint helps to relax the GI tract. Also, sometimes just having ice helps me. I hope some of this helps. Hang in there.

Any tips from others are appreciated.

Thank you so much, Lumineer, for mentioning the peppermint tea. I am going to take note and try that.

Finallythin, is the sensation you are feeling pain or discomfort? I am not questioning you at all. Just wondering because sometimes it is hard to distinguish between the 2. I am 6 days post-op and still feel discomfort when drinking/eating/taking meds and pray it passes soon. I also had some heartburn in the hospital (due to pain meds I think) and they gave me Miralex and that helped with some of the discomfort. You are not alone and if it is pain you feel, I think you should call your MD. They would rather here now then later.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
