If You Made It to Goal...

Recommended Posts

I was wondering for all the people who have made it to their goal, how much did you lose before surgery?

Nothing. I gained 6 lbs. :) but did drop 4 lbs on my two day pre-op liquid diet. So a real gain of 2 lbs. I was self pay though.

Ok, I have 2 lbs to goal, so I'll just include myself. I lost 0 lbs before surgery.

And I was also self pay. :)

My surgeon does not allow us to gain not even one pound. I've been struggling with losing, just losing a pound here or there before with ins. I've been having food funerals too. I was just curious if this mind set will have an effect on my results after surgery.

Personally, I don't think it will! Your mindset really changes after the surgery. The motivation is strong. food funerals are actually really common. I think you'll be be fine! :)

I lost 10 lbs the week before surgery - the darn pre op diet was a requirement. I would still count that week as perhaps the most difficult aspect of the entire journey! I was self pay, but the surgeon was strict about the preop diet and the need to lose the 10 lbs that week before.

I lost 23 lbs from Jan. 2013 to August of 2013. My bariatric team required that I lose a minimum of 10 lbs before I would be scheduled for surgery. I lost an additional 15 lbs during my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I was sleeved on August 26th, 2013. I have just reached my surgeons goal for me which was 70% of my excess body weight. I started at 289lbs and I am now 200lbs. I am hoping to reach my personal goal of 160 by my 1 year anniversary.

Did losing weight before surgery help? I would like to think that it did. I gave myself a head start. I had a better understanding of what I can, can't and shouldn't eat. Maybe its not the way everybody else approached this but it worked for me.

I have a possible 1-2 week pre-op liquid diet. I am sure I will lose weight on that. I am absolutely terrified of that diet. Everyone I know who had to do it said it was the worst experience ever. I don't know if I can handle not chewing anything for a month and a half! I guess where there is a will there is a way.

The pore op diet is tough because you still have that big stomach and all the hormones in your body that want you to eat..I struggled through it and lost 15 pounds.it was rough but far from the worst thing that's ever happened to me.after the surgery everything changed.even though your still on liquids and it's boring you just can't handle as much anymore.you will get fuller faster.when you move on to puréed foods it's even more different.dont think about it so much.i am thrilled with my weight loss so far and love the restriction.feels like freedom.

I lost 32 lbs over 4 months. My program required me to lose 10% before they would schedule surgery. They provided a pre op diet, which I followed pretty closely. I was very motivated because I felt it was my last chance to get the extra weight off.

Hi there,

I was afraid of the diet as well--I wrote a long post about it and got some fantastic support here. I started my preop diet exactly 2 weeks ago and have lost 13 pounds. I'm not going to sugar coat it, the first 4 days were horrible. Detoxing from carbs are a very real thing. I had terrible headaches and was constantly hungry. But by the 5th day, I was feeling much better. Now I'm no longer hungry and I'm actually consuming fewer calories in a day than what my surgeon requires. I am drinking Protein shakes and sugar free beverages, plus green veggies.

The funny part is, I was supposed to have surgery tomorrow but I'm still waiting on my insurance authorization, so that has delayed things. So I'm going to stay on the preop diet until my surgery date. If I had known that I would have had to be on the diet even LONGER than the required 2 weeks, I probably wouldn't have had the guts to start it at all! :)

So yeah it's hard, especially in the beginning, but I wouldn't call it the worst thing ever. You'll be just fine!

I started my pre-op diet on Oct 2nd and had surgery Oct 15th. I lost 15 lbs during that time, (also the last two days before surgery were just clear liquids- broth, juice, etc. For me, it was like a carbohydrate detox, which wasn't fun at all but doable for a limited time. Definitely worth it!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
