Protein bars - how many is too many

Recommended Posts

I am six weeks post op today! I am on soft foods beginning to introduce normal foods and it is going well, except my Protein intake. I have just found nature valley Protein Bars 190 cal 6 g of sugar 10 g protein and I love them and can eat a whole one in one sitting. My question is, can I have more than one a day? I can't stand Protein Powder, I just ordered the Unjury sample pack and am praying it is as good as people say! I have bought so many different protein powders, ready to drink Protein Drinks just to have them sit there and never touched again (waste of money)!

It is a good idea to try to introduce real food into your diet..it will get your system introduced to real food and the Protein drinks and bars are meant to be taken at this stage in an emergency....

1 is okay, no problem...but it will be good to explore food and find high Protein foods such as yogurt, cottage cheese, things like that...K

I would suggest you look at Quest bars, you can get them at GNC (4 for price of 3) or I order mine from Amazon prime by the case. They have 20 g of Protein and are high in Fiber, so the net carbs are closer to 6-8 depending on the flavor. They make a good snack all at once (microwave for 10s out of the foil packet) or even just half a bar sometimes. I think the stuff with more sugar can be a slippery slope. I have had as many as 2 Quest bars a day, on a busy day, but try to limit it to one. I think with the more "fluff" food ones, you're better off limiting it even more, but that's just my opinion (as I consider my poor food choices and think pot, kettle).

Good luck. I like Protein shakes with soy milk, some fruit, and some powdered Peanut Butter. whey Protein is the best, or so I was told. unjury chicken Soup makes a nice change, but don't overheat the Water or it separates.

Also, ready to drink Protein Shakes are good, depending. Oh Yeah Cookies and cream are fun every once in a while. I can almost believe it's a milk shake with the floaty bits.

At my 4 week check up last week Doc told me to stop drinking Protein drinks and start eating protein bars. I hate shakes so this was good news to me. I really have been eating chicken, tuna, tilapia and yogurt to get my protein as I hate bars/shakes...hopefully this works and I don't lose my hair...already lost enough from the back and foot surgery I had last year.

At my 3 week check-up, my NUT told me to cut the shakes/bars back to one day now that I am post-op, or they could slow down weight loss. So, I typically have that after my strength training or 1 mile in house video walk.

When I travel for appointments, I keep a Protein bar and a bottle of Water in the car - just in case we are out too long and I need a pick-me-up.

I am three and a half months out and down just about 90 pounds. I personally use the Fiber One Protein Bars and they have a nice variety. shake wise I use the VI protein Mix that can only be gotten online. It is tasty and I usually mix it with milk and a scoop of Peanut Butter :-) Hope this helped!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
