Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Brant and I had the plication surgery on October 24th and have lost 69 pounds. I had the surgery here in Washington as part of a clinical trial. Upon doing my research on the different procedures it interested me as you do not have the potential for a leaking staple line like the VSG. I know that complication is highly uncommon, but the idea of having my stomach held closed with staples was a bit disconcerting. The clincher was that my insurance would not cover any procedure, so I was going to be private pay, and plication was almost $6k less as the after care was included for participating in the study. I look forward to seeing what everyone else has to share as we all go through this journey together. In just under four months this process has already significantly changed my life and my only regret is that I did not do it sooner.

Hello there Brant. There are many of us here who have different stories and reasons why we have chosen our particular surgeries. My husband and I were both sleeved, me in November and he on December 2. We also wish we could have had this surgery a long time ago, but my husband looks at a boat for 5 years before he buys, it just took him 10 years to trust the sleeve. Actually 10 years included reaching Medicare age and finding our Medicare would cover the surgery. Our BCBS and Avmed refused to pay.

My husband watched the surgery video, me, no way was I watching. I do not care what they did, we just had an awesome and wonderful surgeon and we trusted him to put our lives in his hands.

You are doing great on the weight loss, and good job! We are 66 and 67, and I only wish we could have done this 10 years sooner before our health worsened. Best of luck to you, and hope to see you posting and making good friends This is an awesome support group! Linda

Thanks for the warm welcome and kind words Linda. It took me about a year to wrap my head around the idea and get to a place where I was ready and knew I could let go of the past, embrace all the required changes and succeed.

I was reading the plication a little while ago whilst researching what I could do regarding my failed sleeve. I read and was told that it is great for a sleeve revision.

After care involves monthly appointments for the first year, every three months in years 2 and 3, with nutritional counseling every 3-4 months (or more often) if I want it.

Georgia, Plication, or more accurately the Laprascopic Greater Curvature Plication, is a procedure where they fold the stomach in on itself and suture it to create the restriction. The current procedure is to fold in, suture, fold in, and suture again. It had been used for years in Europe, Iran, and other countries, is practiced in Mexico, and is available under clinical trials here in the USA, which is how I had the surgery.

That's sounds really interesting. So,basically, if something goes wrong they can "unfold", huh? That sounds pretty cool. Is the stomach folded so that only the non-stretchy part is the smaller part so it can't stretch out over time?

Tara, most surgeons still aren't doing the plication and mine is part of an investigational study, which is how they do it as of right now. As far as rules I was given, they pretty much just give you the lapband rules. I was told this is because both are restrictive procedures that don't remove part of the stomach.
