"No matter what anyone says to you or what comments any one makes I want you to know that I'm really proud of you for getting your stomach surgery. "

I just received that in a text from my 17 year old daughter, Jolie. Yeah. It made me cry.

All I'd told her was that I was gonna get a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and hopefully it would allow me to lose enough weight that some of the pressure on my spine would be eased.

We used to go cross country 3 miles a day. Rain or shine. As a family. Then I had my injury, gained 150 pounds because I was sedentary and fed my emotions to "feel better".

She's apparently watched several documentary type videos on the surgery and educated herself very well. I honestly thought the less she knew, the easier it would be on her. Not the case. I feel like I really dropped the ball by not going into greater detail with her on my surgery, but it's ok because she picked that ball up and dribbled it all the way to the basket by herself.

Then she said there was one lady named Melissa who was so worried that after weightloss surgery her family would be judgmental, she was 600 pounds and had "only" lost 200. She thought they wouldn't tell much of a difference and be critical of her even getting the surgery. When her family first saw her the burst out in tears of joy. That was the first time they'd seen her able to even walk that far.

She said "if Melissa can do this then so can you. You got this".

February 18th is my day and she's right. I got this.

Superfatty, this post made me cry too. Your daughter is one mature awesome young lady. Include her in your process as much as you feel comfortable, because she will most certainly be a source of inspiration and motivation for you. I could feel her love for you in that quote and that is such a wonderful gift. I am really happy for you.

My daughter is who inspired me to get surgery. She had gotten the RNY but I was too afraid of that surgery. I wish the sleeve was as popular then as it is now. She has gained alot back.

You're going to be so happy with your sleeve! I am excited for you!

Thank you and I don't know about the ticker. I only use the phone app and haven't even seen people's tickers. Have you used the search bar and typed "tickers" in there? If nobody answers on here you may need to search it out.

When u go to your profile, top right is a tab to edit profile, then use the tabs on the left to choose what part of your profile you want to update, I believe as long as you update your surgery information with your current weight, your ticker changes automatically.

Thanks!! You can borrow mine. They're actually ages 22, soon to be 19, and 17. They'll give you practice in case you want some. Lol.

Actually my oldest isn't here all the time Bc he works out of state for lengths at a time, middle child has his own place and Jolie is here when there is no school (4 day weekend for her so we'll probably binge-watch movies). Easy peasy.

Thank you, she will be a great support person. It's odd you posted here. I just read your introduction post and googled sleeve placating. Definitely keep in touch so we can see how you're doing. It seems like you're doing great to me. Btw, cute little baby :)

I'd actually put "cute little girl" Bc I was thinking about my daughter and about died when I hit send!!! I'm a dork

No worries, before he had his first haircut, we were starting to get a lot of people asking "how old is she." I will definitely keep in touch. I am liking this site and the people on it. Seems like we can all be great support for each other. My wife is very supportive, but there is a lot of it that she doesn't quite understand, as you would expect if she's not going through it herself.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
