Considering The Sleeve, What Are Your Pros And Cons?

Recommended Posts

I've not had any cons so to speak.

The first few days post-op were not fun and games but it is surgery so I was well prepared after reading the boards.

It's all pros for me!

Was on 10 pills per day plus insulin for diabetes, high blood pressure, etc...

I've now been taken off ALL meds. Just taking Vitamins.< /p>

More energy!

More comfortable in my own skin!.

Can do lots more now than I could do approx. 80 lbs ago.

Good luck with your decisions!

I chose the sleeve over bypass because I wanted the least amount of stuff inside me altered and because I was concerned about the malabsorption issues that can happen with bypass. I like that the food I consume doesn't skip the beginning of the natural digestive process since it is not funneled directly into my intestinal tract.

I have had no cons to speak of. The first week or so postop was a little rough, but not really any worse than I was expecting. So far I haven't come across any foods that I can't tolerate. The pounds are dropping, my physical condition is improving by leaps and bounds, and I feel better than I have in years. For me, these things are all very motivating and keep me on track. Like with anything else, it's necessary to change behaviors and use self-discipline....but it seems easier to me to do that now with this wonderful tool to help me.

Some days my reflux is worse than prior, some days better. Other than this, it has been easier than I dared to imagine. All feels very "natural" to me (small portions, slower eating, less carbs).

Also, my thyroid packed in after 2 months but is was dodgy before... If you have anything like that monitor closely as surgery is a stress on your body - I waited 3 months to get tests done, and that was a silly waste of time. Even so, I've lost 27 kg and am 5kg from my goal... And I feel soooo much better.

Cons: I now have acid reflex. Never had it before surgery. But it's a small price to pay.

Just to name a few!

Pros: I lost 70 pounds since surgery on Sept 27, 2013

I feel 1000 times better.

I feel normal.

I don't think about my next meal.

I don't think about starting a new diet on Monday and eat everything in sight until then.

Had very little pain and no gas pain after surgery.

Recovery was quite easy. Only off of work for 1 week.

I could go on and on.

I agree with most all of the above, but in reality, and although I mostly love even my "cons" it can sometimes be frustrating. Please keep in mind I'm just shy of 8 weeks out...

.. sometimes my body NEEDS food but my sleeve disagrees

..still struggling to get hydrated.. low energy

.. head hunger is a bi***

.. scared of regaining in the future

... everyone always wants to know how much I weigh

...I still get hungry

...no matter how hungry I get I can only eat just a little bit and very slowly

All these things are awesome and a pain in the butt at the same time!

... I love my sleeve! Good luck!

The pros are major- forced Portion Control, great overall weight loss if you follow the rules

The cons- being forced to deal with head hunger and disordered eating habits, being able to eat around your sleeve, having to follow rules about eating, drinking, and exercise for the rest of your life if you want to keep the weight off.

The sleeve is not a cure-all. It is a tool that gives you a "leg up" on you weight loss efforts. I would get sleeved again in a heartbeat. I still have food struggles and some days are better than others but I am so much happier with my quality of life at 150 lbs than I ever was at 250 lbs.

I don't have any cons yet. Like some of the earlier kids out there I worry about reversing my progress by making bad choices eventually…but I would face that with any WLS.

My New Years resolution will NOT be to lose weight next year!

I'm 10 months post op

Down 95 lbs

My eating seems natural now. No one questions my eating or portions now. I feel great. Can shop for normal size clothes. Am way more active than before. At 5 or 10 years out will I still be loving my sleeve? I don't know for sure but can't really see why not.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
