November 2013 Post Op

Well don't be discouraged! If your saw people posting the 20lb loss in this forum it's because they had a different procedure. Most of us had 2 weeks of liquids before surgery and longer time on liquids after surgery. You'll see results! Keep positive!

Anybody else still on a post-op liquid diet? I haven't even come close to fluid goals let alone Protein goals. I feel so sick and I think it's bc I'm not getting enough in. I was able to get my first Protein Shake in today at 15g. I'm almost a week out of surgery. Any suggestions?

Sip, sip...you could be getting dehydrated.I'd call the doc to check.

I had my surgery 11/15/13. I lost 23 pds the first 10 days. I am now on soft foods but I haven't lost anything for almost a week. I started walking yesterday. Is this normal???? Feeling discouraged. I also have PCOS and have had s heavy cycle for 2 weeks. Is this normal ; (

Hi Velvett72! I/we had my/our surgery 11-11-13 I went in first then my Hubby. He was losing like you and I was barely moving on the scale then after a week he was at a stall and I kept losing 2 pounds here 3 pounds there and when we went for our 2 week follow up he had lost a total of 30 and I lost 26. I told the Dr that he was losing faster and the Dr said that some of us have a quick start and some are at a steady pace but that should not discourage me because either way I am losing. So it is normal to lose than hit a stall but it will start up again. Congrats on your weight loss!

I'm two weeks out and I'm getting in about 300 calories a day..my surgeon wants 600 calories a day and 60g of Protein. .which is nearly impossible:( I hope this gets easier! It's really hard mentally when u feel like ur starving yourself! !!!

I went for a 1 week follow up today and I'm down 17lbs in 8 days! However, I'm still on Clear Liquids for another week before I can progress to full liquids. Any suggestions for Protein, I can't seem to stomach anything! I've tried about 30 different varieties and flavors and I hate them all...I feel like I've cheated by adding unsweetened almond milk to them to try and make em more palatable. I've also tried a smidge of ff cottage cheese. Is this bad? At most I've gotten in 20g of protein with just the shakes in one day :-/

Hmmm my surgeon doesn't have a requirement for calories. I would be more focused on Protein and fluid...I focus more on Fluid because I know I don't want to be dehydrated, I feel miserable when I am. Just try your hardest, the calories and protein will increase when we move to puree and soft foods. Keep tryin, it'll be worth it!

Jencvt.. I am 15 days post op from Rny and my poor rerouted intestines must be so confused... They must of slept for 6 days .. Then awoke and I just couldn't keep drinking to replace what I was losing! Once they moved me up to soft foods ( cottage cheese, eggs .. Laughing cow cheese wedges... I was doing so much better! Now each day is a step better and I so enjoy the PB2 powder in my shakes!! Still cannot get the 64 ozs of fluids and 50 grams of Protein in a day.. But it IS getting a bit closer also... Hang in..we all heal differently! Enjoying this forum as a newbie also! DYAN OSBORN.. Perrysburg, ohio

Hi dyan:) yes I'm eating laughing cow wedges as well! Not ready for cottage cheese or eggs just yet. ..This may be TMI but I haven't pooped in 10 days:( I did a bowel prep with Miralax before surgery and I've only been on full liquids so my surgeon wasn't too concerned but he said I could try miralax one dose if things get critical. .lol..have u been going through this? ? I've been sipping on prune juice all day and so far nothing!

I did the miralax once, tried walking more.. Nurse also suggest a fleet enema but I didn't need that after a day post miralax... So much better after your bowels begin to work..many on this forums post like they all kinda go through consipation and then diarherra... Mine are still figuring out those hormonal signals they get from your brain the first few weeks out... Or as you add more normal foods! # hoping :-(

I had my band fitted on 12th November and I've lost 19lbs. But this last week I've gained 1lb! I just look at it like everything catching up and hopefully I'll lose more next week. Think it's just one of those things, try not to be discouraged. And try not to weigh yourself everyday as it gets you're down.. don't worry I know how you feel.

I'm a March post op, but thought I'd answer your question. You will hit stalls along the way while your body adjusts to everything. Don't be worried about those they are normal. I as well have pcos. My cycle after surgery was really heavy and also long. I was told from my surgeon that it was more than likely from all the blood thinners that we are given in the hospital. Hope these help you a little. :) good luck with your recovery.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
