I Need Some Encouragment During My Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I am currently in day 3 of my pre op diet. I have to do this diet until December 2. I feel like I cant do this. None of my friends can really encourage me because none of them has faced the problem that I am facing. I am trying my hardest not to give up because I feel like I have come too darn far to give up. Im just so irritable today and I dont know why.

That sounds familiar! Please don't give up - first 3 days are the worst. After Day 4, it becomes a way of life almost. Today is my 14th day and I have surgery on Friday. What kept me going was thinking about how healthy I want to be after, my daughter and my husband. You CAN do this. It will not be forever and remember, it's the gold at the end of a very long rainbow!!

I start mine next week. You can do it! I have the same fear. I am single and live alone with my dog. He loves to eat lol! My family is nearby but not available to be there every minute and help me plan and prepare what I'm eating. So I share your fear. But you CAN do it! Cause I'm gonna do it. Like someone else said you've some too far to stop. I just signed up here tonight cause I am going to need support too, and I think all of us sticking together will be the key. So keep posting and hang in there. I'm not scared about the surgery (December 10) I'm just scared of being on my own to take care of myself. I shouldn't be. I'm 51 college grad been at my job 28 years manage 6 people and a portfolio of $18MM in receivables. But taking care of myself, yes it's scary! :-)

Yup first 3 days are the hardest and by your last 3 you will be lucky if you get 3 shakes a day in lol I was not hungry at all my second week and I lost 15 lbs which was nice! I was so excited to do my pre op because I knew the big day was near finally, that kept me motivated.

Congrats on your up coming surgery but sorry to hear you will be alone. One tip get one of those grabbing things, you know the ones they show on tv for reaching things up high or behind things...they are only about 10 bucks at Walmart but you will not be able to bend over or stretch should you drop anything lol came in very handy

Andrew, you can manage this on your own. I went to the hospital alone, got a ride home from a friend and have managed quite easily on my own throughout recovery. It's always nice to have the support of friends and family, but it is entirely doable on your own and the support and knowledge on websites like this is helpful.

You obviously have project management and scheduling skills--transfer them from your work to your health and personal life.Think of this as a new part time job and plan accordingly. Clear your calendar of unnecessary activities. For the weeks immediately prior to and post-op, your activities and foods will be limited. Review your doctor's food program and stock up on the things you will need so you are not tempted to grab some thing inappropriate when stressed. Commit time for a daily walk or other exercise. Plan time for a mid-day nap and plan to go to bed an hour earlier for the first month. Allowing yourself more rest will help you heal and rebound faster. You will be fine! Good luck on your journey!

I would like to thank everyone for the encouraging comments. I finally got through day 3 and I am currently on day 4. I must say it is becoming alot easier as I get further into it. I am starting to count the days down.

Andrew Jourdan I totally believe that you can do this on your own. You have made it this far doing it on your own and I know that you will be able to continue doing it after surgery. I think it is easier to live alone and do this because you dont have to worry about seeing food that other people eat. It will only be you and your dog and your Clear liquids.

Andrew, Porchue has a great point. When you live alone you don't have to make other's meals or watch them eating things that are tempting. Your dog won't be begging for some of your dinner if you're having Crystal Light or a Protein shake! Heck, even your dog will get healthier in this process. LOL

You will have more personal time to take care of yourself when you don't have children or a spouse to care for as well. Best of all, no one else will look at you with crossed eyes or have hurt feelings when your hormones act up a few weeks after surgery and you get cranky--which you probably will. There's an emotional roller coaster phase ahead. But all this passes and you get on with your life and get happier. Just look at the smiles in the after photos of the 'before and after' sets.

You're right. I think getting my body cleared of all these impurities will allow me to do that. I'm just a big baby lol!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
