Attention Ladies Who Took Birth Control Pills

Recommended Posts

It will sure hurt your weight loss if you get pregnant this early out. Lots of women get really fertile really quickly after surgery.<br><br>

Edit: posted that before I saw the reply from Jerzy. Wow. I hope your surgeon and other doctors are guiding you through it. That would be so stressful! I was not trying to make light of your situation.

Thanks! It didn't stop my loss. I loss 80 while pregnant (even though I could have lost more if I wasn't) The drawbacks were confusion. You know after surgery we all are getting to know our new stomachs, how they work and what works best for us. For me I didn't know if what was making me sick was from the surgery or the baby. Every complication I had was a toss up between the two. I was afraid because I seen posts of ppl eating very little and being full and I was newly post op and felt like I was still eating too much and was constantly stressing about that. Besides throwing up multiple times daily, the only complication I had was severe anemia which required me to have 3x/week 90min Iron infusions.

After the baby was born I lost 40 lbs in 3 weeks. I truly felt what restriction was. I can not eat what I used to but I have not thrown up one time since then. I know I may be lucky to have had weight loss surgery and given birth within 9 months safely but I would not recommend anyone to do it. Emotionally it was hard. Pregnancy made me gave cravings but my new stomach didn't get the memo and I made myself throw up numerous times.

But all is well now and I'm sooooo happy!!

Do all doctors require you to stop BC prior to the surgery? I'm havering the sleeve Feb. 4th and haven't done my preppy appointment yet. I had lapband (I'm having it removed) 2 years ago and didn't have to stop for that. Just wondering.... I have horrible issues if I'm not on BC. Nonstop bleeding for weeks and once it lasted almost 2 months. Not fun!

Mine didn't. I kept taking mine because of the same issues. W/o bc I would bleed for weeks really heavy. But be careful, some pills don't absorb. I was supposed to be crushing mine but my stupid surgeon didn't tell me.

Took BCP for many many years before surgery. My surgeon required I stop them 2 weeks pre-op. After surgery I decided to stay off them in fear of gaining weight once starting again. I'm 9 weeks out & am still off them. My OB/GYN told me it was totally up to me if I wanted to get back on them. My main question is to any ladies who were on them & continued them post op...did u notice it hindered your weight loss or helped? I kinda miss the regularity of periods & no cramps but I don't want to stall (again!) thanks!!!!

I am told to stop taking BC two weeks before and 6-8 weeks after due to it increasing the risk of developing clots. My surgeon automatically gives heparin while in the hospital to decrease the chances. I have been on BC for many years to regulate and it is always given a bad rap about weight gain- if you read the fine print it says weight gain OR loss....AND is minimal, less than 5 pounds. So I wouldn't worry about it affecting your weight loss.

My concern isn't it affecting my weight loss but more so my weight loss affecting my periods. Rapid weight gain or loss can drastically change menstrations....so to me.... The benefits outweigh the risks. So I will continue taking my BC when cleared to do so.

My doc has not told me to stop taking mine, I called yesterday to double check and am waiting for confirmation. I hope I can stay on it, I am on it for birth control reasons, and I do not want to play games with the post op fertility and really don't want to have to abstain completely either.... well we will see.

I am still waiting on a surgery date...I have 14# to lose before my info is submitted to insurance.....BUT...My doctor told me that BCP's weren't as effective after surgery, so I am off of the pill and got an IUD. Painless insertion, and works great! Plus, I don't have to worry about remembering a pill!!! :)

Why are they not as effective? My surgeon said after surgery we are SUPER fertile due to hormone changes and weight loss. All birth control has the same effectiveness of 99.9% if taken correctly. So to me, it's personal preference.

Yes, was required to stop 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after due to it increasing risk of blood clots, PE's and DVTs.

I'm on it and never stopped. I even took it the night before surgery. I take Cryselle... it's low dose but keeps me regular. I had the shots in my stomach to thin my blood too. I just got home yesterday. My surgery was Tuesday. Anyway, the nurse said because they give you antibiotics right before you go in to surgery is why the birth control might not work the first month and to use other methods. This is common anytime I've been sick and have gone on antibiotics they say you aren't protected the first month, so use other methods. They should alwYs te you that. I thought people were aware of this. If not, hopefully you know now so you aren't suprised later! :)

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
